Stop for one night on the N1 coastal road between Agadir and Dakhla. The town has basic hotels and fuel, but no sights worth a detour.

Boujdour is a fishing town on the Atlantic coast of Western Sahara, about 200 km south of Laayoune and 200 km north of Dakhla. It exists for the N1 traveller: a place to sleep, refuel and eat. The beach and the lighthouse are the only reasons to stop the car, and neither takes more than 20 minutes. Most travellers use it as a one-night break on the long coastal drive.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • North Africa ↗Plan links between North African countries by air or by ferry via Europe; the only regularly usable land borders for visitors are Tunisia–Algeria and Morocco–Mauritania via Western Sahara.
  • North Africa ↗Book Saharan nights (dunes, desert camps, oasis tours) between October and April; from May to September desert day temperatures regularly exceed 40 °C and many tours stop.
  • Western Sahara ↗In practice, entry is through Morocco and Moroccan entry rules apply; check them for your passport before booking.
  • Western Sahara ↗Stay on main roads west of the berm; the area around and east of it contains landmines and unexploded ordnance.
  • Western Sahara ↗Expect frequent police checkpoints on the coastal road; carry your passport and copies.

Entry rules depend on your passport. Full visa guide

Safety

Boujdour is safe for a one-night stop. The main risks are driving fatigue on the N1 and the lack of services (no ATM, limited phone signal). Keep your passport with you for checkpoints.
  • Checkpoints on the N1 north and south of town; have your passport and vehicle papers ready.
  • No ATM in town confirmed; carry enough cash (MAD) for fuel, food and the room.
  • Fuel stations are on the N1; fill up before leaving if heading south toward Dakhla (next station about 150 km (93 mi)).
