Before you start
Welcome to the Castle Hill & Fisherman's Bastion audio walk in Budapest. 3 stops: Matthias Church, Fisherman's Bastion and Buda Castle. Morning cluster across the river: Matthias Church and Fisherman's Bastion before the tour groups; a climb or a bus up, and little shade.
Szentháromság tér, Fisherman's Bastion and the Buda Castle walls; the palace and the funicular are at the south edge. Underfoot: cobbles and paved terraces; slope: steep; shade: low.
Budapest is really three towns stitched into one: Buda and Óbuda on the hilly west bank, Pest flat and grid-laid on the east. The union came late, in 1873, but the layers underneath go back to Roman legionaries, Ottoman pashas and Habsburg archdukes.
Before you start: Matthias Church: quiet inside; no photos during services. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
1. Matthias Church
Mátyás-templom
Stop 1 of 3: Matthias Church. Locally, Mátyás-templom. Arrival point: Walk or taxi to Szentháromság tér.
Go at opening on Castle Hill, before the tour groups; a short visit with the bastion terrace next door for the river view.
Across the river, Fisherman's Bastion (1902) and the rebuilt spires of Matthias Church, both by Frigyes Schulek, are romantic, deliberately fanciful reconstructions of a medieval skyline rather than copies of anything that stood there before.
Cover shoulders and knees; quiet inside. Groups from mid-morning; hours change for services and events. Shoes on.
Walk:Next, stop 2: Fisherman's Bastion. It's about 2 minutes on foot. Route: Walk next door. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
2. Fisherman's Bastion
Halászbástya
Look for
- Lower promenade
- Upper towers and walkway
- Upper walkway looking north over the Danube
- Matthias Church spire framed through an arch
Stop 2 of 3: Fisherman's Bastion. Locally, Halászbástya. Arrival point: Walk from Matthias Church, next door.
A free viewing terrace next to Matthias Church; go at opening with the church, or the upper towers open later for a ticket — either way, leave before the mid-morning tour buses.
Look for Lower promenade: Level walk along the wall, free, with river views between the arches. Look for Upper towers and walkway: The postcard angle over the Danube and Parliament. For a photo: Upper walkway looking north over the Danube, before 09:00. For a photo: Matthias Church spire framed through an arch, morning light.
No drones. Quiet at opening; shoulder to shoulder with tour groups from about 10:00. The view is free from the lower promenade at all hours; only the seven upper towers and the top walkway need a ticket. Named for the fishermen's guild that once defended this stretch of the medieval wall, not for any fishing on the hill itself.
Walk:Next, stop 3: Buda Castle. It's about 8 minutes on foot. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
3. Buda Castle
Budai Vár
Look for
- Courtyards and the Matthias Fountain
- Hungarian National Gallery
- Budapest History Museum
- Matthias Fountain courtyard
- Terrace above the funicular, looking over the Danube
Stop 3 of 3: Buda Castle. Locally, Budai Vár. Arrival point: Walk south from Szentháromság tér, or bus 16 / funicular from the Chain Bridge end.
The former royal palace holds two separate museums (the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum); pick one for a first visit and walk the grounds and courtyards for free.
Look for Courtyards and the Matthias Fountain: Free, level walking; the fountain depicts a hunting legend of King Matthias. Look for Hungarian National Gallery: Hungarian art from medieval altarpieces to the 20th century. Look for Budapest History Museum: The palace's own medieval foundations and the city's history. For a photo: Matthias Fountain courtyard, morning, before groups arrive. For a photo: Terrace above the funicular, looking over the Danube, late afternoon light.
No flash photography in front of the artwork inside the National Gallery. Grounds always busy with photographers; museum interiors quieter than the terraces outside.
End of the walk
That's the end of the Castle Hill & Fisherman's Bastion walk. To carry on, Belváros & Danube Corso is about 15 minutes away (taxi or bus down and over the chain bridge).
