Before you start
Welcome to the Centre-ville & Place de l'Indépendance audio walk in Bujumbura. 3 stops: Place de l'Indépendance, Central market area (Marché central) and Craft and curio stalls (centre-ville). Morning cluster: the independence square, the market area and a lunch table within a short walk; finish before the midday heat.
Place de l'Indépendance east to the Marché central area (approximate box). Underfoot: patchy paving and road edge; slope: flat; shade: low.
Bujumbura is a small lakeshore capital with an outsized history: a German trading post, a Belgian mandate town, the capital of an independent kingdom and then a republic, and the stage for some of the most difficult chapters in the country's post-independence politics.
Before you start: Do not photograph government buildings or the police. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
1. Place de l'Indépendance
Stop 1 of 3: Place de l'Indépendance. Arrival point: Walk from a centre-ville hotel.
The town's memorial square: twenty minutes on a morning walk from the hotel, with the centre's cafés a few steps away.
Do not photograph the monument's guards, nearby government buildings or police. Quiet in the morning; busier after office hours. Shoes on.
Walk:Next, stop 2: Central market area (Marché central). It's about 7 minutes on foot. Route: Walk east. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
2. Central market area (Marché central)
Marché central
Stop 2 of 3: Central market area (Marché central). Locally, Marché central.
The main market district: go in the morning with small notes, a day pack and a hotel-recommended guide if you want to buy; the old market burned in 2013, so the layout is not verified.
Pickpockets work the market: keep phones and cash out of sight. Crowded from mid-morning; quietest before 09:00. Ask before photographing stall owners.
Walk:Next, stop 3: Craft and curio stalls (centre-ville). It's about 5 minutes on foot. Route: Walk to the craft stalls. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

3. Craft and curio stalls (centre-ville)
Marché de l'artisanat
Stop 3 of 3: Craft and curio stalls (centre-ville). Locally, Marché de l'artisanat.
Wood carvings, basketwork and drums sold from a cluster of stalls near the centre: go with small notes, expect to bargain, and treat the first price as an opening offer.
The centre-ville retains a number of Belgian-era commercial and administrative buildings — simple, functional structures built for a lake-port town rather than a showcase capital, since Usumbura was always a secondary administrative centre within Ruanda-Urundi rather than its most prestigious address.
Bargain politely; a firm no and a smile ends a negotiation without offence. Quiet outside the mid-morning window; some stalls close midday. Wood carvings, woven baskets and drums (ingoma-style, decorative rather than ceremonial) are the usual stock; quality and stock vary by trader and by week. The first price to a visitor is an opening offer: counter well below it and expect to meet somewhere in the middle.
