First trip: base in Bujumbura for 3–4 nights on Lake Tanganyika and make day-trips south along the lake; add Gitega for 1–2 nights (drums at Gishora, national museum) only if your government's advice for the route allows. Fly in via Addis, Nairobi or Entebbe — the Rwanda land border is closed — and bring enough clean US dollars or euros for the whole stay.

- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- East Africa ↗Carry the yellow fever certificate on every leg of a multi-country trip: Uganda and Burundi check it for all arrivals, and a stop in Kenya or Ethiopia makes the next border ask for it.
- East Africa ↗Advice for Ethiopia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and the Congo border areas can change within days; read your government's page the week you fly and before every regional flight.
- East Africa ↗Price park, reserve and permit fees before comparing lodges: they are charged per person per day, often with VAT, and are fixed whatever bed you choose.

Burundi receives few tourists and has limited infrastructure: fuel shortages, few ATMs that take foreign cards, a wide gap between official and street exchange rates, and slow roads are normal. Some areas carry advice against travel, especially the north-west around Kibira forest and the Congo border, so plan around one base with a local driver. The reward is Lake Tanganyika's beaches almost to yourself, the royal drum tradition and green tea hills. The drier months (roughly June–August) make roads easier.
About Burundi
A small, densely populated, landlocked republic of about 14 million on Lake Tanganyika, among the world's poorest countries by income. Like Rwanda it was a monarchy with Hutu, Tutsi and Twa, then a Belgian colony. Cycles of ethnic violence from 1965 to a civil war (1993–2005) killed hundreds of thousands. The CNDD-FDD party has ruled since 2005; President Évariste Ndayishimiye took office in 2020. The 2025 reform cut the provinces from 18 to 5, and relations with Rwanda remain frozen.

Each bar is 1 to 5. Green means the score makes the trip easier, amber is middling, red is harder; the words next to each score say what that end of the scale means, so colour is never the only signal.
Cheap day-to-day, but visas, flights and hired cars dominate.
Cash only in practice; almost no foreign card acceptance and a complicated exchange rate.
French and Kirundi dominate; English is official but limited.
3G/4G in Bujumbura and towns; weak elsewhere.
Few buses, fuel shortages, no rail, closed Rwanda border.
Advisory areas in the north-west and on the Congo border; political tension; weak health care.
Hot and humid by the lake; mild in the hills.

Money & passes
Cash necessity: 5/5 (5 means cash for most things)
- Currency is the Burundian franc (BIF). Foreign cards work at very few places; bring US dollars or euros in clean, recent notes for the whole trip.
- The official rate is far below the street rate; change only at banks or licensed bureaux, and ask your hotel what they accept — check current rules.
- Mobile money (Lumicash, EcoCash) works with a local SIM, but visitors mostly pay cash.

Deep dive
This deep dive is for the traveller who wants to understand one of Africa's least-visited countries. Burundi shares a language, a social structure and much of its colonial history with Rwanda, yet its path diverged: a kingdom that survived into independence, decades of massacres in both directions, a long civil war ended by a power-sharing deal, and since 2015 an increasingly closed state. Its drums, its lake and its hills are what visitors remember.
1The kingdom and its drums1 min
From about the 17th century a kingdom ruled by a mwami grew in the central highlands, reaching its largest extent under Ntare IV Rugamba in the early 19th century. Unlike Rwanda's, Burundi's monarchy balanced several power groups: the ganwa, princes of royal lineage who stood apart from both Hutu and Tutsi, governed provinces and often fought the king.
Drums were the symbol of royal power. The sacred drum Karyenda stood for the kingdom itself, and drum sanctuaries such as Gishora kept drummers who played for the king at the planting festival. The ritual dance of the royal drum — a dozen or more drummers with large drums balanced on their heads, dancing and leaping in turn — was inscribed by UNESCO in 2014. Performances today follow rules on who may play and where.
Burundi's monarchy survived colonial rule and independence, and was abolished only in 1966. Gitega, the old royal area, was made the political capital again in 2019.

2Explorers, Germans and Belgians1 min
Richard Burton and John Speke reached the northern end of Lake Tanganyika in 1858, and in 1871 Henry Morton Stanley and David Livingstone stayed at Mugere, south of today's Bujumbura, while exploring the lake after their famous meeting at Ujiji; a stone marks the spot. Germany made Burundi part of German East Africa in the 1890s, with a military post at Usumbura (Bujumbura) on the lake.
Belgium took over after the First World War and ran Ruanda-Urundi as a mandate and later a UN trust territory. As in Rwanda, it governed through Tutsi and ganwa chiefs, issued identity documents recording ethnicity and gave the Catholic Church control of schooling. Coffee was made compulsory for farmers and became the main export.
Prince Louis Rwagasore, son of the king, founded the UPRONA party, which united Hutu and Tutsi in a nationalist movement and won the 1961 election. He was assassinated weeks later with the involvement of Belgian-backed rivals; his death on 13 October is a public holiday, and many Burundians see it as the moment the country lost its chance at unity.

3Massacres, civil war and Arusha1 min
After independence the army and politics came under a Tutsi-dominated elite. In 1965 and 1972 Hutu uprisings were followed by mass killings: in 1972 the army killed an estimated 100,000–200,000 Hutu, targeting the educated, in what many historians call a genocide. Hundreds of thousands fled to Tanzania. A series of military presidents followed.
In 1993 Melchior Ndadaye won Burundi's first democratic election as its first Hutu president; he was murdered by Tutsi soldiers after three months. Killings of Tutsi and army reprisals against Hutu began a civil war that lasted over a decade and killed around 300,000 people. His successor, Cyprien Ntaryamira, died in the same plane as Rwanda's president in April 1994.
Peace talks mediated by Julius Nyerere and then Nelson Mandela produced the Arusha Agreement of 2000, which introduced ethnic quotas in government and the army. The main Hutu rebel movement, the CNDD-FDD, joined politics, and its leader Pierre Nkurunziza became president in 2005. The airport now carries Ndadaye's name.

4Burundi since 20151 min
In 2015 Nkurunziza ran for a disputed third term. Protests were crushed, a coup attempt failed, and over 400,000 people fled. Media and civil society were shut down, the country left the International Criminal Court, and Western donors cut aid. Nkurunziza died in 2020, shortly before his successor Évariste Ndayishimiye, also of the CNDD-FDD, took office.
Ndayishimiye reopened somewhat to donors, but the economy is in crisis: foreign currency is scarce, fuel queues are routine, and the official exchange rate is far from the market rate. In 2025 the government merged 18 provinces into five and cut the number of communes, and the ruling party won the legislative elections overwhelmingly.
Regionally, Burundi sent troops to fight the M23 in eastern Congo and closed its border with Rwanda in January 2024, accusing Kigali of backing the RED-Tabara rebels; it was still closed in 2026. For a visitor this means arriving by air or from Tanzania, and checking advice for the west.

5Lake Tanganyika, the hills and the Nile1 min
Burundi is small — about 27,800 km² — and almost entirely hills, which is why it is called the 'land of a thousand hills' like its neighbour. The west drops steeply into the Rift Valley and Lake Tanganyika, the world's longest freshwater lake and second deepest, shared with Tanzania, Congo and Zambia. The lake holds hundreds of fish species found nowhere else, including the cichlids prized by aquarists, and the small ndagala fish caught at night by boats with lanterns.
The highlands form part of the Congo–Nile divide. From a spring at Kasumo near Rutana, the Ruvyironza flows to the Kagera and Lake Victoria, which is why a small stone pyramid there marks what Burundi calls the southernmost source of the Nile. Nearby, the Karera Falls tumble through green forest.
With about 14 million people on so little land, Burundi is one of Africa's most densely populated countries. Almost every hillside is farmed with beans, bananas, cassava and coffee, and much of the original forest is gone. Kibira in the north-west, the largest remaining forest, is a national park with chimpanzees but is currently under travel advisories.

6Hills, beans, beer and daily life1 min
Most Burundians live on their hillside farms (rugo) rather than in villages, and daily life follows the rains. Beans are the staple protein, eaten with plantains, cassava or sweet potatoes; on the lake, fish replaces meat. Grilled brochettes and a large bottle of Primus are the social evening in Bujumbura.
Banana beer, urwarwa, is brewed at home and shared at weddings and negotiations; offering drink is a sign of respect. Coffee and tea are the main exports, grown by small farmers and processed at washing stations.
Kirundi is spoken by everyone, which gives the country a single language across ethnic lines. Greetings are elaborate and respectful, and the word 'amahoro' — peace — is also the usual hello. Football is the national passion, and President Nkurunziza's love of the game made it part of state life.
