Uganda

First trip: land at Entebbe and sleep there, then give Bwindi (gorillas) 3 lodge nights and Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls 2–3 more; fly domestic hops if you have under 10 days, because the drives take most of a day. Book the US$800 gorilla permit through a licensed operator before anything else, and carry a yellow fever certificate — Uganda checks it for everyone.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • East Africa ↗Carry the yellow fever certificate on every leg of a multi-country trip: Uganda and Burundi check it for all arrivals, and a stop in Kenya or Ethiopia makes the next border ask for it.
  • East Africa ↗Advice for Ethiopia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and the Congo border areas can change within days; read your government's page the week you fly and before every regional flight.
  • East Africa ↗Price park, reserve and permit fees before comparing lodges: they are charged per person per day, often with VAT, and are fixed whatever bed you choose.

Uganda's highlights sit at the far edges of the country and the drives between them are long, so plan on fewer parks with more nights each. Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking need permits booked well in advance, and permits are limited per day; since 2026 foreign visitors book gorilla permits through licensed Ugandan operators and pay in full at booking. The drier months (roughly June–August and December–February) make trekking easier; the rains make trails muddy but do not stop them, and April, May and November permits are discounted. Uganda gorilla permits cost about half of Rwanda's, which is why many travellers trek here and add Kibale chimps and a savanna park.

About Uganda

A landlocked republic of about 50 million on Lake Victoria and the Nile, with one of the world's youngest populations. Yoweri Museveni has ruled since his rebel army took Kampala in 1986 and won another term in the January 2026 election against Bobi Wine; opposition supporters face arrests, and elections bring internet shutdowns. Uganda hosts more than 1.5 million refugees, mainly from South Sudan and the DRC — among the largest refugee populations in the world.

Entry: visas and borders

2026 rules — confirm on the official portal

All visitors except East African Community and a short list of exempt nationals need a visa, applied for online before travel: a single-entry e-visa (US$50) or the East Africa Tourist Visa (US$100, Uganda + Kenya + Rwanda, 90 days). Visas on arrival have largely been phased out — check. Uganda asks every arriving traveller for a yellow fever certificate, not only those from risk countries. After the 2026 Ebola outbreak (declared over on 27 August 2026), some neighbours screen arrivals from Uganda — check your next country's rules.

Safety

  • Road travel is the main everyday risk: avoid driving after dark and do not ride boda-boda motorbike taxis without a helmet.
  • Some governments advise against travel to areas near the borders with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan, and have issued warnings for some western national parks: check your own government's advice before you go.
  • Gorilla trekking: keep the minimum distance your guide sets, and do not trek if you are unwell; permits can be refunded or moved only under the park's rules.
  • Same-sex relations are criminalised with severe penalties under Ugandan law, including the 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act; LGBT travellers should read their government's advice before travel.
  • Political rallies and protests can turn violent; avoid them, especially around elections.

Uganda pairs with Rwanda (a second gorilla option) and Kenya or Tanzania (savanna safari) by regional flights; the US$100 East Africa Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda.

Deep dive

6 min read · 6 chapters

This deep dive is for the traveller who wants more than the gorilla hour. Uganda sits where the East African savanna meets the Central African forest, and where the Nile leaves Lake Victoria. Its history runs from powerful lake kingdoms through a British protectorate, the terror of the Amin years and a long war in the north, to four decades under one president. The six chapters below explain what you see from the road: banana gardens, royal tombs, refugee settlements and forests guarded for their gorillas.

1Lake kingdoms: Bunyoro and Buganda1 min

Before colonial rule, the lands around Lake Victoria and the western lakes were organised into kingdoms. Bunyoro-Kitara was the older power in the west; Buganda, on the north shore of the lake, rose from the 17th century to dominate the region with a strong king (kabaka), appointed chiefs, a navy of war canoes and banana farming that fed a dense population. Smaller kingdoms such as Toro, Ankole and Busoga lay between them.

Arab and Swahili traders reached Buganda in the 1840s, followed by Speke in 1862, Anglican missionaries in 1877 and Catholic White Fathers in 1879. Converts split the court into Protestant, Catholic and Muslim factions. Between 1885 and 1887 Kabaka Mwanga had dozens of young Christian pages killed; they are remembered as the Uganda Martyrs, canonised by the Catholic Church in 1964, and each 3 June millions of pilgrims walk to the shrine at Namugongo.

Kingdoms were abolished by Milton Obote in 1967 and restored as cultural institutions by Museveni in 1993. The kabaka of Buganda today has no formal political power but great influence; the Kasubi Tombs in Kampala, royal burial houses thatched with reed, are a UNESCO site rebuilt after a fire in 2010.

2Protectorate, independence and the Amin years1 min

Britain signed the Buganda Agreement in 1900, giving the kingdom autonomy and its chiefs private land in exchange for collaboration, and ran the rest of the protectorate through Ganda agents. The Uganda Railway reached the lake from Mombasa; cotton and later coffee became cash crops; South Asian traders ran most shops. The protectorate was never a settler colony like Kenya.

Uganda became independent in 1962 with Obote as prime minister and the kabaka as president. In 1966 Obote sent the army, led by Idi Amin, to storm the kabaka's palace, and made himself executive president. In 1971 Amin seized power himself. His eight-year rule killed perhaps 100,000–300,000 people; in 1972 he expelled around 50,000–80,000 Ugandan Asians, collapsing the economy. The 1976 Israeli hostage rescue at Entebbe airport happened under his rule.

Amin's 1978 invasion of Tanzania's Kagera region led Tanzania to invade in return, and he fled in 1979. Obote returned after disputed elections, and his army's counter-insurgency in the Luweero Triangle north of Kampala killed tens of thousands more.

3Museveni, the north and the present1 min

Yoweri Museveni's National Resistance Army took Kampala in January 1986 after a five-year bush war. His government brought stability and growth to the south and became a donor favourite for its early response to HIV. Presidential term limits were removed in 2005 and the age limit in 2017, and Museveni has won every election since 1996, most recently in January 2026 against the musician-turned-politician Bobi Wine amid arrests and an internet shutdown.

The north paid the price of the new order. From 1987 to about 2006 Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army abducted tens of thousands of children in Acholi areas, and most of the population lived in camps. The LRA moved into Congo and the Central African Republic, and northern Uganda has since rebuilt; Gulu is now a growing regional city.

Uganda is one of the world's largest refugee hosts, with more than 1.5 million people from South Sudan, Congo and elsewhere who are given land to farm and freedom of movement. It keeps troops in Somalia and eastern Congo. The 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act, among the harshest laws of its kind, cut some foreign aid. Oil fields around Lake Albert and a pipeline to Tanga in Tanzania are expected to start production around 2026–27.

The country sits on a high plateau between the two arms of the Rift Valley: Lake Victoria in the south-east, the western Rift with Lakes Albert, Edward and George along the Congo border, and dozens of crater lakes around Fort Portal. Rainfall is generous, which is why the south is covered in banana gardens and coffee.

The Victoria Nile leaves Lake Victoria at Jinja, drops through rapids that are now partly flooded by dams, crosses Lake Kyoga and then squeezes through a 7-metre gap at Murchison Falls before entering Lake Albert. The search for this outflow drove European exploration in the 1860s; Speke's claim of 1862 was disputed for years.

On the Congo border, the Rwenzori Mountains rise to 5,109 m and carry equatorial glaciers, now shrinking fast. Their slopes hold giant lobelias and groundsels, and the range is often hidden in cloud: Ptolemy's 'Mountains of the Moon' are usually identified with them. In the far south-west, the Virunga volcanoes straddle Uganda, Rwanda and Congo.

5Gorillas, chimpanzees and conservation1 min

Mountain gorillas live only in two blocks of forest: the Virunga volcanoes shared by Uganda, Rwanda and Congo, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. After years of decline, careful protection and tourism revenue have pushed numbers above 1,000, and the species was moved from critically endangered to endangered in 2018. Bwindi holds about half the population.

Uganda opened gorilla tourism in Bwindi in 1993. Groups are habituated over about two years to tolerate eight visitors for one hour a day. A share of each permit goes to communities around the park, and the Batwa, forest people evicted when Bwindi and Mgahinga became parks in 1991, now run cultural trails; their compensation remains contested.

Kibale Forest has one of the highest densities of primates in Africa, with about 1,500 chimpanzees and species such as red colobus and L'Hoest's monkey. The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre in Entebbe cares for confiscated animals, and the Ngamba Island sanctuary on Lake Victoria looks after orphaned chimps.

Gorillas catch human respiratory diseases, which is why the rules are strict: 7 metres distance, masks when requested, and no trekking with a cold. Since 2026, foreign visitors book permits only through licensed Ugandan operators and pay in full at booking.

6Matoke, rolex and everyday Uganda1 min

Matoke, green cooking bananas steamed in their leaves and mashed, is the heart of a Ganda meal, served with groundnut sauce, beans or meat stew. Luwombo, meat or chicken steamed in banana-leaf parcels, was once royal food. In the west, cattle-keeping Banyankole prize milk and ghee; in the east, smoked bamboo shoots (malewa) are a Bagisu speciality.

The rolex, a chapati rolled around an omelette, began as student street food in Kampala and is now a national symbol. Seasonal nsenene grasshoppers, fried with onion, sell by the cupful in May and November when they swarm to city lights.

Bark cloth, beaten from the inner bark of a fig tree, is one of the oldest textiles in the world and UNESCO-listed; it is used for funerals and ceremonies in Buganda. Music moves from the kadongo kamu guitar ballads of the 1960s to today's Afrobeat and dancehall from Kampala's studios. Football, betting shops and Premier League loyalties fill every trading centre.
