  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • East Africa ↗Carry the yellow fever certificate on every leg of a multi-country trip: Uganda and Burundi check it for all arrivals, and a stop in Kenya or Ethiopia makes the next border ask for it.
  • East Africa ↗Advice for Ethiopia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and the Congo border areas can change within days; read your government's page the week you fly and before every regional flight.
  • East Africa ↗Price park, reserve and permit fees before comparing lodges: they are charged per person per day, often with VAT, and are fixed whatever bed you choose.

Kenya's distances and road conditions are what break safari trips: a park that looks close on the map can be a full day on rough roads. Build the trip around lodge or camp nights (two nights minimum per park), fly light aircraft where time is short, and plan the season first: the long rains (roughly March–May) and short rains (roughly November–December) change road access and prices. Park and reserve fees are charged per person per day and went up in 2025–26 (Masai Mara US$200 a day from July to December), so they now weigh as much as the lodge in a mid-range budget.

About Kenya

A presidential republic of about 56 million people and East Africa's largest economy, built on farming, tourism, services and remittances. William Ruto has been president since 2022; youth-led protests over taxes and police conduct shook the country in 2024 and 2025, and the next general election is due in August 2027. Kenya also leads regional mobile money and tech, and hosts large refugee camps near the Somali and South Sudanese borders.

Cost: About US$30–35 — check. Online eTA with passport scan, photo, flights and hotel; apply 3+ days ahead (up to 90 days before). Entry: visas and borders

2026 rules — confirm on the official portal

Kenya dropped visas in 2024 for an electronic travel authorisation (eTA) that most non-African visitors must get online before flying, for about US$30–35. Since 2025 almost all African passports (not Libya or Somalia) are exempt and can stay up to 2 months; East African Community citizens up to 6 months. The US$100 East Africa Tourist Visa still covers Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda together. A 2026 rule requiring US$50,000 of health insurance checked through the eTA was suspended by the High Court in August 2026 — check its status before you fly.

Safety

  • Use ride-hailing or hotel-booked taxis in Nairobi after dark; do not walk with a phone out in the city centre at night.
  • Road travel between parks is slow and accidents are a leading risk: avoid driving after dark and use an experienced driver-guide.
  • The UK and others advise against all travel to Mandera, most of Garissa and Lamu counties (Lamu and Manda islands excepted) and areas near the Somali border: check your own government's advice before you go.
  • Wildlife is wild: stay in the vehicle during game drives unless your guide says otherwise, and do not walk around unfenced camps at night without an escort.
  • Street protests happen in Nairobi, often around June–July anniversaries and budget debates; stay away from crowds and follow local news.
  • Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Kenya; be discreet in public.

Kenya pairs with Tanzania (Serengeti, Zanzibar) and Uganda or Rwanda (gorillas) by short regional flights; the East Africa Tourist Visa covers Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda on one US$100 visa.

Country rules

Inherited by every page below
  • Apply for the Kenya eTA only on the official portal (etakenya.go.ke) at least 3 working days before you fly; lookalike sites charge double. Most African passports have been exempt since 2025.
  • Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention and check whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for your route, including transits.
  • Plastic carrier bags are banned; leave shop and duty-free plastic bags behind before you fly in.
  • Light aircraft to the parks have strict baggage limits, usually soft-sided bags only and a low total weight (often around 15 kg (33 lb)); confirm the limit with your operator and leave a hard case in Nairobi.

Etiquette

  • Ask before photographing people, including Maasai communities; a village visit usually involves a fee agreed in advance.
  • Greet before asking a question; a handshake and a few words of Swahili (jambo, asante) are appreciated.
  • Dress modestly away from beach resorts, especially in Mombasa's Old Town and Lamu, which are largely Muslim.
Long rains (roughly Mar–May)
Some camps close, park roads turn to mud, and light-aircraft schedules thin out.
Migration peak (roughly Jul–Oct)
Masai Mara lodges book out months ahead; river crossings draw vehicle crowds; reserve fee doubles from 1 July.
Christmas and New Year
Coast hotels and safari lodges fill with local and international holidaymakers.

This deep dive is for the traveller who wants to know what sits behind the safari vehicle window. Kenya is a young state built on very old ground: the Rift Valley where much of human evolution was traced, a Swahili coast that traded with Arabia and India for a thousand years, a settler colony whose land questions are still unsettled, and a present shaped by mobile money, youth protest and a conservation model that now leans on Maasai landowners as much as on national parks.

1The Rift Valley and human origins1 min

The Great Rift Valley cuts Kenya from Lake Turkana in the north to Lake Magadi on the Tanzanian border. Tectonic plates pulling apart made the escarpments you drive down on the way to Naivasha, the soda lakes where flamingos feed, the volcanoes of Longonot and Suswa, and the fertile highlands on either side that the colonial state later reserved for white farmers.

The same geology exposed ancient sediments. Around Lake Turkana, teams led by the Leakey family and others found some of the most complete early human fossils, including the 1.5-million-year-old Turkana Boy and stone tools more than three million years old at Lomekwi. Olorgesailie, a short drive south of Nairobi, shows hand axes left where they were dropped.

Later, the region became a meeting point of language families. Bantu-speaking farmers moved in from the west during the first millennium AD, Nilotic herders such as the ancestors of the Maasai, Samburu and Kalenjin came from the Nile valley, and Cushitic speakers such as the Somali and Borana occupied the dry north. Almost every Kenyan community traces its history through one of these movements.

2The Swahili coast1 min

For more than a thousand years the Kenyan coast looked east. Monsoon winds carried dhows from Arabia, Persia and India south between November and March and home again from April, and the towns along the shore grew rich on ivory, gold from further south, mangrove poles and slaves. Swahili culture, language and Islam formed in these ports as African communities mixed with traders who settled.

Stone towns such as Gedi, Mombasa, Malindi, Pate and Lamu competed with each other and allied with outsiders when it suited. Vasco da Gama found a friendly ruler at Malindi in 1498; Mombasa resisted and was sacked. The Portuguese built Fort Jesus in 1593, lost it to Omani Arabs in 1698, and for the next two centuries the coast was loosely ruled from Muscat and then Zanzibar.

The Swahili language itself is Bantu in grammar with many Arabic, Persian, Portuguese and later English loanwords. It became the trade language of the interior along caravan routes, and after independence the national language of Kenya and Tanzania. Lamu, where the old town has barely changed since the 19th century, is the best place to see coastal architecture: carved doors, rooftop terraces and narrow lanes built for donkeys.

3Colony, Mau Mau and independence1 min

Britain declared a protectorate in 1895 and built the Uganda Railway inland from Mombasa; Nairobi began in 1899 as a railway depot on a swamp. Settlers followed, and the cool central highlands were reserved for white farming, pushing Kikuyu, Maasai and Kalenjin people off land they had used for generations. Africans paid hut taxes, carried identity passes and worked on settler farms.

Land grievances fed the Mau Mau uprising of the 1950s, mostly among the Kikuyu of the central highlands. The colonial government declared an emergency in 1952 and detained tens of thousands in camps where torture was widespread; in 2013 the British government paid compensation to surviving detainees. Jomo Kenyatta, jailed during the emergency, led Kenya to independence in December 1963.

Kenyatta and then Daniel arap Moi built a strong presidency; Kenya became a one-party state in 1982 until multiparty politics returned in 1991. The disputed 2007 election set off violence that killed more than 1,100 people and led to a power-sharing deal and the 2010 constitution, which created 47 counties and a bill of rights. Elections since have been fiercely contested and usually end in court.

Since 2022, under William Ruto, tax rises have provoked youth-led protests organised online; in June 2024 protesters entered parliament and dozens were killed in the crackdown, and protests returned on the anniversaries in 2025. The next general election is due in August 2027.

4People, languages and belief1 min

Kenya has about 56 million people and more than 40 ethnic communities. The Kikuyu are the largest, followed by the Luhya, Kalenjin, Luo and Kamba; ethnicity still shapes voting and patronage, though urban Kenyans increasingly mix and marry across lines. The Maasai and Samburu, whom visitors meet most around the parks, are a small share of the population.

Most Kenyans are Christian, with Pentecostal churches growing fast alongside older Catholic and Anglican congregations. Islam dominates the coast and the Somali north-east. Traditional beliefs survive in rites of passage, such as Maasai age-set ceremonies, and in respect for ancestors.

English is used in government, schools and business; Swahili is the national language and the common tongue between communities. In Nairobi, young people speak Sheng, a fast-changing mix of Swahili, English and local languages. The country is young, with a median age under 20, and unemployment among educated young people is the political issue of the decade.

Maasai life has changed quickly. Group ranches were split into private plots, schooling and mobile phones reached the plains, and many families now earn from leasing land to conservancies or working in tourism. Village visits vary widely: some are community-run, others are commercial set pieces. Ask your guide who benefits before you go.

5Wildlife, the migration and conservation1 min

Kenya banned sport hunting in 1977, and the safari economy has been photographic ever since. National parks are run by the Kenya Wildlife Service, while some reserves belong to counties: the Masai Mara is managed by Narok County, which sets its own fees. Around the parks, community and private conservancies now protect more land than the state reserves do, paying landowners a lease in return for keeping cattle and fences off.

The Great Migration is really a year-round circuit of about 1.5 million wildebeest with zebra and gazelle, following rain and grass between Tanzania's Serengeti and the Mara. The herds calve in the southern Serengeti around January–March, move north and west through the long rains, and usually cross into Kenya from about July, when the Mara River crossings draw crowds of vehicles. By October–November they head back south.

Kenya's rhino and elephant numbers fell sharply to poaching in the 1970s–80s. Burning ivory stockpiles, from 1989 onwards, made Kenya the public face of the ivory trade ban. Rhino now live mainly in guarded sanctuaries such as Lake Nakuru, Ol Pejeta and Lewa; Ol Pejeta also keeps the last two northern white rhinos, both female.

Pressure has shifted from poaching to land. Population growth, fences, farming and drought squeeze migration corridors, and human–wildlife conflict with elephants and lions is a daily issue for herders. Higher park fees since 2024–25 are justified as conservation funding and debated as pricing out visitors; for a traveller, the practical effect is that fees now form a large share of any Mara budget.

6Food, tea, music and everyday life1 min

Everyday food is built on maize: ugali with greens (sukuma wiki) and a stew is the national plate. Meat is for weekends and celebrations, when friends order goat by the kilo at a butchery and eat it grilled as nyama choma with kachumbari salad and cold Tusker. The coast cooks with coconut, tamarind and spices, and Indian families who came with the railway made chapati, samosas and biryani Kenyan food.

Kenya is one of the world's largest tea exporters, and chai boiled with milk and sugar is drunk everywhere. Coffee grows on the slopes of Mount Kenya and the Aberdares but most is exported; Nairobi's cafés have made it fashionable at home.

M-Pesa, launched in 2007, turned phones into wallets and changed daily life: rent, school fees, taxis and market stalls are paid by phone, and money moves from city to village in seconds. Visitors can join with a Safaricom SIM and a passport.

Music ranges from benga guitar pop of the Luo and Kikuyu to Swahili taarab on the coast and today's gengetone and Afro-pop on Nairobi's matatus, which are painted, lit and wired with sound systems to win passengers. Running is a national pride: Kalenjin athletes from the highlands around Iten dominate world distance racing.
