- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- East Africa ↗Carry the yellow fever certificate on every leg of a multi-country trip: Uganda and Burundi check it for all arrivals, and a stop in Kenya or Ethiopia makes the next border ask for it.
- East Africa ↗Advice for Ethiopia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and the Congo border areas can change within days; read your government's page the week you fly and before every regional flight.
- East Africa ↗Price park, reserve and permit fees before comparing lodges: they are charged per person per day, often with VAT, and are fixed whatever bed you choose.
- Burundi ↗Check visa rules with Burundi's immigration service (PAFE) or an embassy before booking; carry a yellow fever certificate, which is checked on arrival.
- Burundi ↗Check your government's advice commune by commune: parts of the north-west (Kibira forest, Cibitoke, Bubanza, the RN5 north of the airport) and the Congo border carry advice against travel.
- Burundi ↗Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; malaria is present everywhere including Bujumbura, and medical care is very limited.
- Bujumbura and Lake Tanganyika ↗Advice differs by area: stay within the parts of Bujumbura and the lake road that your own government's advice allows.
- Bujumbura ↗Broken pavements and heat: bags go from the car to the door, never on a walk.
- Bujumbura ↗Dusk falls near 18:00 all year. Be at your hotel by then and take a hotel-arranged car after dark; do not walk between clusters.

A restaurant serving Indian and Swahili-coast dishes — curries, samosas, pilau — reflecting the trading communities long settled around the lake: a sit-down dinner near your hotel, booked or walked into early.
A sit-down restaurant serving home-style Burundian dishes — beans, cassava leaves, plantain, grilled meat — on a Rohero street: dinner near your hotel, with a car back after.

Rescue anchors
A rescue anchor is a spot where you can stop and recover if the walk goes wrong: a bench, a café, a toilet. Every letter on the map is one anchor, and each has a card below. We check that any point in the cluster is within about 7 minutes’ walk of one, so you are never far from somewhere to sit down.
Lettered circles: rescue anchors (green works in any conditions, amber only on hot days). Dashed outline: the cluster. Red dots: spots more than 7 min from any anchor. Drag to move; click the map, then scroll to zoom.

Nodes in this cluster
- The main Catholic cathedral, on a wide Rohero avenue: a short stop on a morning walk or a car ride if you time it around Sunday Mass, when the singing is the reason to go.
- The hill above Rohero where embassies and villas sit: a car up for the view over the city roofs, the lake and, on a clear day, the hills of DR Congo across the water. Fifteen minutes is enough unless you are eating at a hilltop restaurant.
