Livingstone–Stanley Monument
Place · Kabondo & Musée Vivant
A small lakeshore monument at Mugere, south of town, marking the spot linked to David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley's 1871 canoe trip along the northern lake shore: a half-day out with a driver, not a stop on a walking morning.

- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- East Africa ↗Carry the yellow fever certificate on every leg of a multi-country trip: Uganda and Burundi check it for all arrivals, and a stop in Kenya or Ethiopia makes the next border ask for it.
- East Africa ↗Advice for Ethiopia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and the Congo border areas can change within days; read your government's page the week you fly and before every regional flight.
- East Africa ↗Price park, reserve and permit fees before comparing lodges: they are charged per person per day, often with VAT, and are fixed whatever bed you choose.
- Burundi ↗Check visa rules with Burundi's immigration service (PAFE) or an embassy before booking; carry a yellow fever certificate, which is checked on arrival.
- Burundi ↗Check your government's advice commune by commune: parts of the north-west (Kibira forest, Cibitoke, Bubanza, the RN5 north of the airport) and the Congo border carry advice against travel.
- Burundi ↗Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; malaria is present everywhere including Bujumbura, and medical care is very limited.
- Bujumbura and Lake Tanganyika ↗Advice differs by area: stay within the parts of Bujumbura and the lake road that your own government's advice allows.
- Bujumbura ↗Broken pavements and heat: bags go from the car to the door, never on a walk.
- Bujumbura ↗Dusk falls near 18:00 all year. Be at your hotel by then and take a hotel-arranged car after dark; do not walk between clusters.

Know before you go
- The monument marks the 1871 canoe trip Livingstone and Stanley made together along the northern shore and the Rusizi River mouth, to settle whether the river flowed into or out of Lake Tanganyika (it flows in) — not the famous "Dr Livingstone, I presume" meeting, which happened at Ujiji in present-day Tanzania.
- A simple marker rather than a museum: the drive and the lake views are as much the point as the stone itself.
- Hire a car and driver for the round trip rather than attempting public transport; agree the fare and the wait time before you leave.

Questions and answers
Is this where Stanley found Livingstone?
No — that meeting was at Ujiji, on the Tanzanian shore of the lake. This monument marks their joint canoe survey of the lake's northern end soon after.

Do I need a guide?
Not required, but a driver who knows the current state of the road and the site is worth arranging through your hotel, since the monument itself is a simple marker with little signage.
