Major city · Philippines
Cagayan de Oro

Give CDO 2 nights as a Northern Mindanao base, not a beach stop: the city is a working port and regional hub, and the coast and highlands are day trips.
Cagayan de Oro is the regional centre of Northern Mindanao and the gateway to the region, on Macajalar Bay with the Cagayan River splitting the city in two. The downtown Poblacion sits on the eastern bank. It is a hot, commercial city of malls and markets rather than a resort; most travellers use it as a base for the coast at Iligan and the Bukidnon highlands. Laguindingan Airport is 46 km west, so build in transfer time.
