Eta and entry
The eTA is an online authorisation most visa‑exempt foreign nationals need before flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport. It links to your passport and is valid for up to five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. Apply well before your flight; most approvals are immediate but some take longer.
US citizens are exempt from the eTA and only need a valid US passport. UK, Australian, New Zealand and Irish citizens must obtain an eTA for any air arrival, unless they are US lawful permanent residents, who are also exempt. When entering by land or sea, the eTA is not required, but a valid passport (and any required visas) is still mandatory.
