- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- West Africa ↗Carry an original yellow fever vaccination certificate on any West African trip: several countries on the coast road demand it of every arrival, and the rest demand it after you have passed through a neighbour.
- West Africa ↗Cross land borders and drive between cities in daylight only; plan each crossing as a full travel day with cash for fees and passport copies for checkpoints.
- Senegal ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport on official Senegalese government sources before booking.
- Senegal ↗Dress modestly in towns and at religious sites: shoulders and knees covered.
- Senegal ↗Check your government's advice before travelling to parts of the Casamance region in the south.
Cap Vert-Thies is the westernmost corner of Africa: the Dakar peninsula plus the Thies region behind it. Almost every traveller lands here first, because Blaise-Diagne airport (DSS) sits inside it. Sleep in Dakar for city, Gorée and music, or on the Petite Côte (Popenguine, Mbour, Palmarin) for beach and delta. The inland towns — Thies, Mboro, Joal-Fadiouth — are half-day or day-trip stops, not bases, unless you have a car and driver.

- Dakar to Mbour or Joal in the afternoon can take far longer than the map suggests; leave early.
- Beach currents on the Petite Côte are strong in places; ask locally before swimming.
- Do not plan a same-day airport run and a Petite Côte transfer without slack — traffic through Dakar is the bottleneck.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gorée Island | Dakar | check min | check | Ferry from the Dakar port; crossing is about 20 min, but port access, ticket queues and boarding push the total to roughly 1 h — go on the first morning sailing and return before the afternoon crowds. |
| Popenguine | Dakar | 90 min | check | Cliff path and reserve; return before dusk. |
| Mbour | Dakar | 90 min | check | Fishing port is busiest early morning; market slows by midday. |
| Joal-Fadiouth | Mbour | 40 min | check | Walk the shell causeway to the island; half a day is enough. |
| Thies | Dakar | 90 min | check | Rail and craft stop on the way to the Petite Côte. |
Bags between cities
No formal luggage-forwarding network; if you change base, take bags with you in the car.
