Go for 2–3 days in late spring or early fall: walk the Victorian streets, climb the lighthouse, and eat seafood. Skip if you want a boardwalk and nightlife — that's Wildwood.

Cape May is the oldest seaside resort in the US, at the southern tip of New Jersey. It is a quiet, walkable town of Victorian houses, a small beach, and a working fishing harbor. Most visitors come for a weekend or a few days, not a week. The town is compact — you can see the core on foot or by bike in a day, but the pace rewards two or three nights. Summer is crowded and hot; the best months are May–June and September–October, when the weather is mild and the crowds thin.

About Cape May

Cape May is a resort town at the southernmost point of New Jersey, on the Cape May Peninsula along the Atlantic Coast. The name can mean the small city at the peninsula's tip, the peninsula itself, or the county reaching about 33 miles northeast to Ocean City. Delaware sits across the Delaware Bay. A canal dug from a shallow creek links the harbor to the bay, making the town effectively an island, long known as Cape Island. Tourism and fishing are the two main industries, and Cape May ranks second to Atlantic City for tourism in the state. The Coast Guard Training Station is also based here.

The town is small compared with other mid-Atlantic and southern resort communities. Cars are allowed, but parking and walking or biking suits the flat terrain. Visitors based in Wildwood Crest, about 10 miles north by road, often use it for day trips.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
