- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
The Maryland Capital Region is the suburban ring around Washington, D.C.: Montgomery County to the northwest, Prince George's County to the east, Frederick County further out. It is not a sightseeing region — most visitors come for family, business or a cheaper bed than downtown D.C. Two or three nights is enough. Sleep near a Metro station in Bethesda or Silver Spring, ride the Red Line into D.C., and rent a car for one day if you want Great Falls, Sugarloaf Mountain or Frederick.

- Bethesda or Silver Spring 2; Metro into D.C. both days
- 3 nights
- Bethesda 2 + Frederick 1, car for the second half
- The Beltway (I-495) moves at 65–75 mph with little gap between cars; if that is not your driving, stay on surface roads or take Metro.
- There is no good east–west route between Prince George's and Montgomery Counties except the Beltway — allow double the map time at rush hour.
- Frederick County has no Metro service; a car or MARC (weekdays) is required.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Washington, D.C. | Bethesda | 30 min | check | Red Line direct; last train is late but check the day's timetable. |
| Great Falls (Potomac) | Bethesda | 35 min | unknown | Car only. Maryland side has the bridge out to Olmsted Island. |
| Frederick | Bethesda | 60 min | unknown | I-270 north; no Metro beyond Shady Grove. |
| Greenbelt (NASA visitor center) | College Park | 20 min | unknown | Green Line to Greenbelt, then a short ride; check opening days. |
Bags between cities
No luggage forwarding here; the region is a base, not a multi-stop route. If you split Bethesda and Frederick, drive your bags — MARC is weekday-only and does not take checked luggage.
