Charlton is a rural town of about 13,000 people in Central Massachusetts, 20 minutes south of Worcester and within an hour of Boston, Hartford, Springfield and Providence. It has no hotel, no train station and almost no sidewalks, so it works as a half-day or full-day stop by car, not as a place to sleep. The draw is a world-known brewery, a lake park and a small historic center.

About Charlton

Charlton is a small town in Central Massachusetts, just outside Worcester. It is mainly a bedroom community, with businesses concentrated in the center of town and along the Route 20 corridor. Despite its rural feel, it lies within 50 mi (80 km) of Boston, Worcester, Springfield, Hartford and Providence.

The town keeps a rural character even though urban areas are close by. It is built around car access, with free parking at most destinations, few sidewalks in many parts and no separated bicycle lanes, so walking and cycling are possible mainly for short distances. Public transport links run through Worcester's Union Station, and WRTA Bus Route 29 has a couple of stops in Charlton between Worcester and Southbridge.

What is worth your time in Charlton.

  • Charlton Center Historic District — The historic center on Main Street holds the Shingle-style Overlook Hotel, the first architect-designed building in the center, the 1905 Colonial Revival Town Hall, military memorials and Federal and Gothic Revival houses; it joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
  • Rider Tavern — This large three-story wood-frame tavern, built around 1797, was long an important stop on the stagecoach road and offers guided tours in summer and at special events; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
  • Number 2 Schoolhouse — A preserved one-room schoolhouse on Northside Road used from 1849 through 1949, with interior tours by appointment.
  • Bay Path Cemetery — At Dresser Hill Road and Muggett Hill Road, it includes the grave of entertainer John "Grizzly" Adams.
  • John Spurr House — Built in 1798 at 27 Main St, the house was added to the National Historic Register in 1976.

  • Visit Buffumville Lake Park for picnic tables and grills, a volleyball court, horseshoe pits, a swim beach without lifeguards, nature and hiking trails, a boat ramp and a 30-hole disc golf course; the recreation area is open from the third weekend of May through the second weekend of September, 8AM to 8PM, and on foot during daylight the rest of the year.
  • Walk the trails at Capen Hill Nature Sanctuary, where the Visitor Center is open Mon–Fri 10AM–4PM and trails run dawn–dusk; the paths connect with the neighboring Tree House Brewing Company trails.
  • Hike the Little River Conservation Area trail from dawn to dusk to see the ruins of a historic fulling mill; it links with the Buffumville Lake trail system and the Midstate Trail.
  • Play golf or use the driving range at Heritage Country Club, which is open to non-members.

Low-crime rural town; the real risks are road-related — no sidewalks on US-20 and Route 31, ice in winter, and unlit rural roads at night. Use 911 for emergencies.
