Go for one night or a day trip from Pittsfield: hike or bike the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail, swim in Cheshire Reservoir, skip it if you want restaurants and nightlife.

Cheshire is a small Berkshire town of about 3,200 people on MA Route 8, between Pittsfield and Adams. It has almost no lodging and few restaurants, but it sits on the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail and the Appalachian Trail, and Cheshire Reservoir gives it swimming, boating and fishing. Most travellers come for a half-day of trail and water, or sleep one night as a base for Mount Greylock and the northern Berkshires.

About Cheshire, Massachusetts

Cheshire is a town in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, with parts of it lying on Mount Greylock. It has a small population, and places to eat and stay are few, but the town offers plenty for outdoor activity: hiking, cycling, boating, swimming, fishing and hunting. MA Route 8 runs through it, with Adams to the north and Lanesborough to the south. The town center sits off Route 116 via Wells Road, and a Berkshire Regional Transit Authority bus stops on Railroad Street near the post office.

The Ashuwillticook Rail Trail, an 11-mile paved path, runs alongside Route 8 through Cheshire, Lanesborough and Adams, and the Appalachian Trail crosses the town with several entry and exit points, including in the center. Cheshire Reservoir, a dammed stretch of the Hoosic River, provides water access. A car is the easiest way to get around, though the town center is largely paved and walkable.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

In the town centre you can walk or bike: the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail runs parallel to Route 8 through Cheshire, and the Appalachian Trail crosses the centre. BRTA Route 1 stops in Cheshire Center on Railroad St near the post office, running between Pittsfield and North Adams via Lanesborough and Adams. There are no designated bike lanes off the rail trail.

Watch out

Safety

Low crime and a quiet town; the real risks are winter ice on trails, unmarked road edges at night, and no cell signal on the Mount Greylock and Chalet Wildlife Area paths.
  • Snow and ice make the rail trail and Appalachian Trail sections hazardous from late fall to early spring.
  • Quarry Rd/W Mountain Rd on the Lanesborough side is closed December–May.
  • Restaurants and shops keep short hours and some close in winter: check before you drive out.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the Mount Greylock and Chalet Wildlife Area trails.
  • The Cheshire Road and Gun Club requires a membership; guests only with a member.
