Churchill

Go for 3 nights in Oct–Nov for polar bears or Jul for belugas; book tundra vehicle, hotel and flight together before anything else.

Churchill is a town of about 870 people on Hudson Bay, reachable only by air or a two-day train. It is the main place to see wild polar bears in autumn and beluga whales in summer. Everything is expensive and capacity is tiny, so the trip is a booking problem first and a travel problem second.

About Churchill

Churchill is a small community in northern Manitoba, sitting on the shore of Hudson Bay at the mouth of the Churchill River, just beyond the boreal forest treeline. It has a permanent population of 870 people (2021). The town is known as the polar bear capital of the world and, only slightly less, as the beluga capital of the world. It is also a base for watching the Aurora Borealis.

The settlement grew from a Hudson's Bay Company fur-trading post and later became a northern grain port. Its rail link from Winnipeg, finished in 1929, was cut by flooding in 2017 and rebuilt after the line was sold in 2018; passenger trains resumed in December 2018. Polar bears gather near town in October and November before the sea ice forms, and belugas enter the river each summer.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk in summer, but in bear season you should not walk alone at night or near the shore. Taxis cover the airport and town. Tundra vehicles, boats and dog sleds are booked through operators, not used as transport.

Watch out

Safety

The town is safe to walk in daylight, but polar bears are a real hazard from July to November: stay with a guide near the shore, keep streets lit at night, and report any bear to the patrol.
  • Never walk near the shore or the dump in bear season; call the bear patrol on +1 204-675-2327 if you see a bear in town.
  • Hotels and tundra vehicles sell out months ahead in October and November and usually need full prepayment with no refund.
  • Summer bugs are serious: bring DEET repellent, long sleeves and long trousers.
  • Winter needs a real parka, insulated boots and goggles; cotton clothing is a bad idea.
  • The train can be delayed for days by weather or track damage: keep a buffer before an international flight.
