Give Clonmel one night as a Suir valley stop between Cahir and Waterford, or skip it if you are looping the west coast.

Clonmel is the county town of south Tipperary, an old walled bridging point on the River Suir with a 1674 market house, a small county museum and a riverbank walk. Most of the town is modern; the antiquities take half a day. It works as a single night on the Waterford–Cahir–Cashel axis, or as a base for the Vee drive and the Comeragh foothills.

About Clonmel

Clonmel is the county town of County Tipperary, a role it shares with Nenagh, and had a population of 18,000 in 2022. It stands on the River Suir, which marks the boundary with County Waterford, though the line dips south across from the town so that some buildings on the far bank stay in Tipperary. The Irish name Cluain Meala means "honey meadow", a nod to the good farmland around it. The town is largely modern, but it holds a number of antiquities worth a look, and it remains a transport hub: Bianconi started his coach network here.

The Suir valley has long served as a natural route through the area, and the island in the river made Clonmel an evident crossing point. County administration is still split between Clonmel and Nenagh, so public sector work is significant locally, alongside engineering, pharmaceuticals and cider brewing.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland is in the EU but not in the Schengen area; it sets its own entry rules and a Schengen visa is not valid for Ireland. Check Irish immigration for your passport.
  • Ireland ↗Ireland and the UK form the Common Travel Area, with no routine checks on the land border. Visitors who are not Irish or British must still meet UK rules (including the UK ETA where it applies) to enter Northern Ireland.
  • Ireland ↗Driving is on the left; rural roads are narrow with hedges and few passing places.

Entry rules depend on your passport. Full visa guide

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable end to end in about 20 minutes; Main Guard, the museum, Old St Mary's and the river bridge all sit within 1 km. Taxis are the only practical option for the racecourse, the greyhound stadium or hotels on the edge. For the Vee, Carey's Castle, St Patrick's Well and Ardfinnan you need a car.

Watch out

Safety

Clonmel is a low-risk town; the real issues are wet, unlit riverbank paths after dark, Friday-night drink crowds on Parnell St, and country roads where you drive on the left with sheep and tractors around blind bends.
  • Online tickets cannot be collected at Clonmel railway station; buy at the machine or on the app.
  • Only two trains a day each way, Monday to Saturday, and no Sunday service on the line: check before you build a plan on it.
  • Pub rooms in the centre can be noisy from the bar and street; ask for a back room.
  • The East Munster Way and riverbank paths flood after heavy rain.
  • Kilcash Castle is unsafe to enter; view it from the lane only.
