The honest verdict
Cotonou is Benin's economic capital, spread flat along the coast and a lagoon. Distances are short but traffic, heat and motorbike taxis make walking between districts a poor idea. The trips that go wrong run out of cash, take a motorbike without a helmet, or swim off the surf beach. Four clusters cover a first visit; Porto-Novo and Ganvié are trips from one kept bed.

Three mistakes to avoid
- Airport "helpers" who take your bag toward a taxi they own: wait for your named hotel driver, or agree the fare before you get in a rank taxi.(Scams)

- Cash (XOF) for markets, maquis, taxis and zémidjans. Cards work in some hotels and supermarkets, and terminals often fail. Carry small notes; change for a 10,000 note is scarce at dawn stalls.

- Keep XOF 10,000 in small notes; use ATMs inside banks or hotels, not on the street, and expect some to reject foreign cards.

- Airport or a phone shop (MTN Benin, Moov Africa): Bring your passport for registration; buy data on the spot.
Etiquette: the top three
- Greetings
- Greet before you ask or buy: a handshake, "Bonjour", and a word of thanks. Skipping the greeting reads as rude.
- Photos
- Ask before photographing people, stalls or shrines; never photograph police, soldiers, the airport, the port or government buildings.
- Dress
- Neat and covered shoulders and knees in churches and near shrines; Sunday best is common at church.
