Cotonou
Cotonou is a morning-and-evening city: the market at first light, air conditioning at midday, and dinner in Haie Vive — always by car, and with cash in your pocket.
Cotonou is Benin's economic capital, spread flat along the coast and a lagoon. Distances are short but traffic, heat and motorbike taxis make walking between districts a poor idea. The trips that go wrong run out of cash, take a motorbike without a helmet, or swim off the surf beach. Four clusters cover a first visit; Porto-Novo and Ganvié are trips from one kept bed.

- Greetings: Greet before you ask or buy: a handshake, "Bonjour", and a word of thanks. Skipping the greeting reads as rude.
- Photos: Ask before photographing people, stalls or shrines; never photograph police, soldiers, the airport, the port or government buildings.
- Dress: Neat and covered shoulders and knees in churches and near shrines; Sunday best is common at church.
- Hands: Use your right hand to give, take or eat.
- Shrines: Do not touch sacred objects or step over ritual items; ask a local guide what is acceptable and what a donation should be.
- Paying: Bargain with a smile in markets and never where a price is posted; agree a taxi fare before you get in.

- Requests for a "fee" to photograph a shrine, a fisherman or a house: ask first, agree the amount, or skip the photo.
