Deir ez-Zor
Check your government travel advice before considering Deir ez-Zor; if travel is allowed, spend 1–2 days for the museum, suspension bridge and desert sites.
Deir ez-Zor is a modest river city on the Euphrates with a small museum, a historic suspension bridge and easy access to desert archaeology. It lacks many tourist facilities, so a short stay of one to two days is sufficient for the main sights; longer visits are justified only for day trips to nearby ruins.

Safety
- Security is volatile: read your government's travel advice before any planning, and do not treat this page as a go-ahead.
- The museum was closed and its collection removed as of 2018; the Armenian Genocide Memorial Church was destroyed in 2015 and the suspension bridge in 2013 — check what is actually standing before you go.
- Buses from Aleppo, Damascus and Palmyra pass many checkpoints; allow extra time and carry documents.
- Bar al-Kandeel on the main street is described as an unpleasant spot; lone travellers and women should avoid it.
- Few hotels take foreign tourists, and fewer still suit lone women; confirm a room before you travel.
