Give Denver 3 nights: one for downtown and LoDo, one for a Red Rocks or foothills day, one for a museum-and-neighbourhood day. Add a car only for the mountains.

Denver is the Mile-High City at 1,609 m, where the High Plains meet the Rockies about 19 km west of the State Capitol. It is a driving city with a compact, walkable core: Union Station, LoDo, the 16th Street corridor and the museums around Civic Center. Most visitors use it as a 2–3 night city stop before or after a Colorado road trip, not as a mountain base.

About Denver

Denver is Colorado's capital and the largest city in the Rocky Mountain Region, sitting in a broad valley where the High Plains rise toward the mountains. It began in 1858 as a placer gold mining camp called the Cherry Creek Diggings. Its elevation of 5,280 feet gives it the Mile-High City nickname. The Rocky Mountains stand roughly 12 miles (19 km) west of the Colorado State Capitol. Within a 560-mile (900 km) radius, Denver is the most populous city, and it anchors a Front Range corridor of more than five million residents. The city keeps ties to its cowboy and mining past while supporting an arts and performing arts scene, outdoor festivals and distinct neighborhoods. It is generally a driving city, with sprawl and traffic among its everyday problems.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable and the free MallRide shuttle runs along 16th Street. RTD light rail and commuter rail (including the A Line to DEN) cover the core and some suburbs; buses fill the gaps. Outside the centre, a car or rideshare is usually faster. Parking meters run to 22:00 on weekdays and are free on Sundays; downtown meters take cards.

Watch out

Safety

Downtown Denver is busy and generally safe in the day and early evening; the real risks are altitude, summer lightning above treeline and a few blocks east of downtown at night. Keep your wits about you around Colfax and the 16th Street corridor after dark.
  • Elevation: 1,609 m. Take the first day easy, drink more water than usual and go easy on alcohol.
  • Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August; plan mountain hikes for the morning and be below treeline by early afternoon.
  • Winter swings hard: snow and 15 °C (59 °F) sunshine can fall in the same week. Pack layers, not one heavy coat.
  • Toll roads (E-470, Northwest Parkway, I-70 express lanes) are cashless or cash-only in places; check how your rental car bills tolls before you drive them.
  • Crossing the double white lines out of an express lane can bring a fine of up to $250.
  • Parking tickets are issued fast: $25, or $50 if unpaid after two weeks.
