Dominica itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks

A good 7-day Dominica itinerary uses two bases: 4 nights in Roseau for Boiling Lake, Middleham Falls and a whale trip, then 3 nights in Portsmouth for Cabrits and the Indian River. Hike every other day, keep one buffer day for rain, and add the Kalinago Territory or the French islands if you have 10–14 days.

At a glance: which length fits you

Dominica rewards slow travel. The island is small but the roads are slow and the trails are steep, so a rushed week means long drives and no buffer for rain. Two bases cover most first trips: Roseau in the south-west for the Roseau valley hikes and hot springs, and Portsmouth in the north for Cabrits, the Indian River and calmer days.

If you have only a week, do the two-base loop and accept that you will skip the east coast. With 10 days you can add the Kalinago Territory and a couple of Waitukubuli National Trail segments. With two weeks, add Guadeloupe or Martinique by ferry, or slow down and add rest days.

7-day itinerary: rainforest and rivers

Days 1–4, Roseau. Land at Douglas-Charles or Canefield, pick up a car or arrange transfers, and settle in Roseau or the nearby valley villages. Day 1 is a soft start: the Botanic Gardens, the Dominica Museum and the Saturday market if your timing lines up. Day 2 is Boiling Lake, a full-day hike from Laudat — start early, carry more water than feels necessary, and only go on a dry day. Day 3 is recovery: Middleham Falls or the Emerald Pool, then a hot spring in the afternoon. Day 4 is a whale-watching trip from Roseau or a shorter valley walk, depending on weather.

Days 5–7, Portsmouth. Drive or take a bus north, roughly an hour by road. Day 5 is Cabrits National Park and Fort Shirley, then the Indian River by boat at dusk. Day 6 is a beach and river day around Portsmouth, or a Waitukubuli segment if you want another hike. Day 7 is buffer and departure — keep it free, because rain can cancel a hike and you will want the slack.

  • Book Boiling Lake with a licensed guide before you arrive; groups fill in high season.
  • Keep one full day unplanned as a rain buffer.
  • Do the longest hike early in the trip, while your legs are fresh.

10-day itinerary: coast to coast

Add two nights on the east coast or in the Kalinago Territory between the two main bases. The Atlantic side is wetter and rougher, with a different feel from the sheltered Caribbean coast, and the Kalinago Territory is the place to learn about the island's indigenous history and crafts.

From there, continue north to Portsmouth for four nights. Use the extra time for two Waitukubuli National Trail segments, a longer river day, and a proper rest day. This is the length where the trip stops feeling like a checklist.

2-week itinerary: Dominica and the French islands

The 14-day version adds Guadeloupe and Martinique by ferry: about three nights in Pointe-à-Pitre, five in Roseau, three in Portsmouth and three in Fort-de-France. Fast ferries link all three islands, but days of operation vary, so build the schedule around the sailing days rather than the other way round.

If island-hopping is not the goal, spend the second week on Dominica instead: more trail segments, the north-east coast, and slower days around Scott's Head and the south-west villages.

Route and logistics

The island's spine is mountainous, so distances look short on a map and take longer than you expect. Roseau to Portsmouth is roughly an hour by road in good conditions. Shared vans and buses are cheap but slow and stop early; a rental car gives you the most flexibility, and you will want it for trailheads. Driving is on the left.

Trailheads for Boiling Lake, Middleham Falls and the Emerald Pool sit along the Laudat and Castle Bruce roads, which is why Roseau works as a base for the first half. Portsmouth puts Cabrits and the Indian River within a short drive. A weekly site pass covers several of the main natural sites.

Notes before you book

Rain is the main variable. The interior gets far more of it than the coast, and a wet trail turns a moderate hike into a long day. Build in buffer days and treat any fixed hiking date as provisional.

Carry cash in East Caribbean dollars for buses, small shops, guesthouses and site fees; cards work in larger hotels and restaurants but not everywhere. Check entry rules and any departure tax before you fly, and confirm ferry schedules directly with the operator, since they change by season.

  • Pack quick-dry clothing, a rain shell and shoes with grip for mud.
  • Book accommodation early for February–May, the driest window.
  • Confirm ferry days and trail conditions locally a day or two ahead.

Questions people ask

What is a good 7-day itinerary for Dominica?

Four nights in Roseau for Boiling Lake, Middleham Falls and a whale trip, then three nights in Portsmouth for Cabrits and the Indian River. Hike every other day and keep one day free as a rain buffer.

How many weeks should I spend in Dominica?

One week covers the two-base loop if you accept skipping the east coast. Ten days adds the Kalinago Territory and trail segments. Two weeks lets you add Guadeloupe or Martinique by ferry, or slow the pace.

What is the best route through Dominica?

Land in the south, base in Roseau for the valley hikes, then move north to Portsmouth. With more time, insert the east coast or Kalinago Territory between the two, and finish with a ferry to the French islands.

Do I need a car in Dominica?

Not strictly, but a rental car makes trailheads and the north much easier. Buses and shared vans are cheap, run on set routes and stop early in the day. Driving is on the left.

When is the best time to visit Dominica?

February to May is generally drier and cooler, which suits hiking. Rain is possible year-round, and the interior is wetter than the coast, so keep buffer days whatever month you choose.

Can I hike Boiling Lake without a guide?

It is a long, exposed full-day route with stream crossings and rapid weather changes. Many visitors go with a licensed guide, and going on a dry day matters more than any other factor.
