Dominica is an independent, mountainous island with few sandy beaches, heavy rain and slow mountain roads. There are no direct long-haul flights, so you connect via another island, and bad weather can cut roads and delay small planes. Plan two bases, one hard hike at a time, and keep hurricane season (June–November) and the rainy months in mind.

About Dominica

Dominica (750 km², about 72,000 people — check) is the youngest island geologically in the Lesser Antilles, with nine potentially active volcanoes, hundreds of rivers and the Caribbean's largest remaining Kalinago community. French and British fought over it until 1805; it became independent in 1978. Hurricane Maria in 2017 damaged almost every building, and the country has rebuilt with a climate-resilience plan, a citizenship-by-investment programme and a new airport.

  • Traffic drives on the left; mountain roads are narrow, steep and blocked by landslides after heavy rain.
  • Flash floods: do not cross rising rivers or stay in gorges when rain starts upstream.
  • Medical facilities are limited: carry insurance with evacuation cover.
  • Hurricane season (Jun–Nov): follow local warnings and your airline; if a storm is forecast, leave early or shelter where your accommodation tells you.

Dominica sits between Guadeloupe and Martinique, which are linked to it by fast ferry and are the easiest connections from Europe.

Eat

Regional food, diets, allergy card

Creole food from gardens and rivers: provisions (dasheen, green fig, breadfruit), callaloo, saltfish and fresh fish, crab back in season, and bakes for breakfast. Kalinago cassava bread comes from the east. Many menus still list 'mountain chicken' historically — it is a protected frog, now off the table.

Dominica is the island the plantation economy never fully tamed: too steep, too wet, too volcanic. The five chapters follow the Kalinago who held it longest, the volcanoes and rivers that shape every trip, the trail that crosses it, the sperm whales offshore, and the rebuilding since Hurricane Maria.

1Waitukubuli and the Kalinago1 min

The Kalinago called the island Waitukubuli, 'tall is her body'. Because its mountains made colonisation slow, Dominica remained a Kalinago stronghold long after other islands fell, and both France and Britain at times agreed to leave it to them.

In 1903 Britain set aside land on the east coast as a reserve; today the Kalinago Territory is home to about 3,000 people, with an elected chief and communal land. Barana Autê, a cultural village near Crayfish River, shows traditional buildings, cassava processing and canoe making, and larouma baskets are sold along the road.

2Volcanoes, rivers and the Boiling Lake1 min

Dominica has more potentially active volcanic centres than any other Caribbean island, and a rainfall that feeds a river for almost every day of the year (the local claim is 365). The result is hot springs, sulphur vents, gorges and some of the last intact rainforest in the Lesser Antilles.

Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO site since 1997, holds the Boiling Lake — a flooded fumarole about 60 m across, kept at a grey-blue simmer by heat below. Reaching it takes a guided hike through the Valley of Desolation, a bare valley of hot streams and steam vents. The lake level and temperature change; it has drained and refilled several times (check conditions).

3The Waitukubuli National Trail1 min

Opened in 2011, the Waitukubuli National Trail runs from Scotts Head in the south to Cabrits in the north in 14 segments, about 185 km in all (check). It links old Kalinago paths, estate roads and forest tracks through villages, rainforest and coast.

Each segment is a day walk with road access at both ends. Storms, especially Maria, damaged sections; some have been restored, others remain rough or closed. Buy the trail pass, ask the trail office or your lodge about current conditions, and plan transport at both ends.

4The sperm whales1 min

Deep water comes close to Dominica's west coast, and a population of sperm whales lives there year-round, with family groups that researchers have followed for decades. Scientists studying their clicks, or codas, have found distinct 'dialects' between clans.

In November 2023 the government declared a sperm whale reserve of about 800 km² off the west coast, limiting ship traffic and fishing, and allowing whale watching only with licensed operators under set rules. Sightings are most frequent from November to April, but whales can appear in any month.

5After Maria1 min

On 18 September 2017 Hurricane Maria struck as a Category 5 storm, damaging or destroying most homes and stripping the forest bare; two years earlier Tropical Storm Erika's floods had already wrecked roads and villages. The government declared the aim of becoming the first 'climate-resilient nation', rebuilding houses, power lines and bridges to higher standards.

Much of the money has come from citizenship by investment. The biggest project is a new international airport in the north-east with a 2,850 m runway for long-haul jets, now under construction and due for completion in 2027 according to the government (check). Until it opens, visitors still connect through other islands, which is part of why Dominica stays quiet.
