Saint Lucia is an independent, mountainous island where the main international airport (Hewanorra) is in the far south and most hotels are in the north, joined by a long, winding road. That drive, not the island's size, is what breaks plans: choose bases so you do it once. Treat hurricane season (June–November) as the main planning constraint.
About Saint Lucia
Saint Lucia (617 km², about 180,000 people — check) changed hands between France and Britain 14 times before becoming British in 1814, which left it English-speaking with French place names, Catholic churches and Kwéyòl. Bananas replaced sugar in the 20th century; tourism now leads. It has produced two Nobel laureates, Sir Arthur Lewis (economics) and Derek Walcott (literature).

- Hike the Pitons only with a guide and start early to avoid the heat.
- Sun and sea: the sun is strong all year; watch for currents and rip tides on unpatrolled beaches, and swim where locals swim.
- Hurricane season (Jun–Nov): follow local warnings and your airline; if a storm is forecast, leave early or shelter where your accommodation tells you.
- Emergency: 911 or 999 (police, fire, ambulance); check the number on your hotel's card as well.

- Crowds and loud music in Gros Islet every Friday night.
- Hurricane season (Jun–Nov, peak Aug–Oct)

Deep dive
Saint Lucia's shape — twin volcanic spires in the south, a long winding road, an airport at each end — explains most trips. The five chapters cover the island that changed flags fourteen times, the Pitons, Kwéyòl and the Nobel island, bananas and cocoa, and why two airports matter.
1Helen of the West Indies1 min
France and Britain fought over Saint Lucia for a century and a half; the island changed hands 14 times, earning the nickname 'Helen of the West Indies'. The French founded most towns and churches, the British took final control in 1814, and slavery ended in 1834.
That mixed past is still visible: French place names such as Soufrière, Vieux Fort and Gros Islet, a Catholic majority, English law and parliament, and a Creole language built mostly on French. Fort Charlotte on Morne Fortune and the ruins on Pigeon Island date from the wars.

2The Pitons1 min
Gros Piton (786 m) and Petit Piton (743 m) are volcanic plugs rising straight from the sea south of Soufrière. With the sulphur springs of the Qualibou caldera and the reef between them, they form the Pitons Management Area, a UNESCO site since 2004.
Gros Piton is climbed from the village of Fond Gens Libres, founded by freed people, with community guides. The marine part is a reserve where boats moor on buoys and fees fund rangers; Anse Chastanet's reef is among the best shore snorkelling in the Eastern Caribbean.

3Kwéyòl and two Nobel prizes1 min
Most Saint Lucians speak Kwéyòl, a French-based Creole, alongside English. Once discouraged in schools, it is now celebrated on Jounen Kwéyòl each October, used on radio and in parliament debates, and written in a standard spelling.
For a country of under 200,000 people, Saint Lucia has an unusual record: Sir Arthur Lewis won the Nobel prize in economics in 1979, and the poet Derek Walcott, born in Castries, won the literature prize in 1992. Both share a birthday, 23 January, now marked as Nobel Laureate Week.

4From sugar to bananas to cocoa1 min
After sugar faded, bananas became 'green gold' from the 1950s, shipped to Britain under preferential trade rules. When those rules ended in the 1990s and 2000s, the industry shrank sharply, and tourism took over as the main employer.
Cocoa is having a smaller revival: estates around Soufrière grow beans for local and international chocolate makers and run tours. Green fig — unripe banana — and saltfish remains the national dish, a reminder of the banana years.

5Two airports, one road1 min
Hewanorra International (UVF), at Vieux Fort in the far south, was built on a Second World War US airbase and has the long runway for jets from Europe and North America. George F. L. Charles (SLU), at Vigie in Castries, is short and hemmed in by the city, so it serves regional flights.
Most resorts are in the north, so many visitors spend 1 h 30–2 h on the winding road from UVF. A redevelopment of Hewanorra, with a new control tower and terminal, is under way in 2026, with the terminal still at an early stage (check). The practical lesson: check your airport, base in Soufrière first if you land at UVF, and never book a tight departure from the north.
