Dublin, CaliforniaDublin

Use Dublin as a 1-night BART base for the Tri-Valley, not a sightseeing stop: there is no historic downtown, and the draws are hills, parks and malls.

Dublin is a fast-growing Tri-Valley suburb 35 miles east of San Francisco, on two BART stations and the I-580/I-680 junction. It has no old town and few headline sights; its value is beds near BART, hill trails, big-box shopping and easy access to Pleasanton, Livermore wine country and Mount Diablo.

About Dublin, California

Dublin is a city of 65,000 people (2019) in Alameda County, in California's East Bay. It sits in the Tri-Valley, 35 miles from San Francisco, and its northern boundary meets Contra Costa County and San Ramon. The city spreads into the golden foothills of the Diablo Range on its east and west sides.

Dublin has no historic downtown and no especially notable tourist destinations, but it works as a base with practical advantages shared with nearby towns. Two BART stations link it to Hayward, Fremont, Oakland and San Francisco, and I-580 and I-680 pass along and through the city. Its climate differs from San Francisco's: summers are hot, dry and windy, and the region is Mediterranean like Pleasanton and San Ramon.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
