Give Dubuque 2 nights: one day for the riverfront museums and the 4th Street Elevator, one for the bluffs and Mines of Spain. Skip it as a base without a car.

Dubuque is Iowa's oldest city, a Mississippi River port built on lead-mining money and stacked up a bluff. The sights split into two clusters about 5 minutes apart by car: the Port of Dubuque riverfront (river museum, casino, Shot Tower) and the downtown blufftop (Cable Car Square, the Fenelon Place Elevator, the art museum). Two nights covers both without rushing; three if you add Field of Dreams or Galena. Public buses run 45–60 minute loops and stop early, so plan on a car.

About Dubuque

Dubuque is Iowa's oldest city, founded in 1833, and sits on the upper Mississippi River along bluffs that face the water. It began as a mining and trading settlement that Julien Dubuque, an entrepreneur from Quebec, established in 1788. The city grew quickly in the 1800s through lead mining, lumber milling, brewing, metal working and river trade, and was Iowa's largest city for most of that century. Its population was 57,686 at the 2000 Census, with about 93,072 in the metro area. German and Irish immigrants shaped much of its character between the 1840s and 1890s, and many 19th-century structures have been kept up or restored.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

  • National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium — Smithsonian-affiliated and run by the Dubuque County Historical Society, it holds six aquariums and covers the river's history.
  • Shot Tower — One of the last standing towers of its kind in the country, 120 ft 5 in tall and a recognized symbol of the city.
  • Cable Car Square — Victorian-era buildings at the base of the elevator now house coffee shops, restaurants and specialty shops.
  • Field of Dreams — The Dyersville field used in the 1989 film, with a Major League Baseball ballpark built nearby in 2021.

  • German immigrants settled the North End and Irish immigrants the South End from the 1840s to the 1890s, and large Catholic parishes tied to each group remain.
  • The city's Catholic presence led to it becoming an archdiocese in 1893, still the smallest US city with that status.
  • St. Mary church has Bavarian stained-glass windows, and St. Luke's Methodist Church holds a collection of Tiffany-designed windows.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the two sight clusters are a short drive apart and buses (The Jule) run 45–60 minute loops with limited evening service. Downtown has one-way streets that are poorly marked and turn lanes that end without warning — follow the lane arrows, not the car ahead. Fares are low (about $1; check current rates).

Watch out

Safety

Dubuque is a small city and most visits pass without incident; check current local conditions before you go. The real risks are winter driving on the bluffs, one-way streets downtown and river currents if you swim. Standard US precautions apply after dark near the bars.
  • Downtown one-way streets and surprise turn lanes: read the signs before you commit to a lane.
  • The Jule buses stop in the early evening; do not count on them after dinner.
  • Winter brings snow and ice on the bluffs — check conditions before driving Mines of Spain or Chestnut Mountain.
  • The Fenelon Place Elevator runs Apr 1–Nov 30 only; it is closed in winter.
