Durango, ColoradoDurango

Give Durango 2 nights: one full day for the narrow-gauge train or Mesa Verde, one for downtown and the Animas River trail. A car helps for day trips.
Durango is a former railroad town of about 17,600 people at 1,985 m in southwest Colorado, between red sandstone bluffs and the San Juan Mountains. It is the base for the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Mesa Verde and the San Juan Skyway. Downtown is walkable; the surrounding sights are not, so most travellers want a car.

About Durango, Colorado
Durango is a town in southwestern Colorado, in the Rocky Mountains, and the largest settlement in that corner of the state, with roughly 16,000 residents. It sits a short drive from Four Corners, where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah meet, at 6,512 feet above sea level. The land around it runs from red sandstone bluffs along the Animas River Valley to the San Juan Mountains, several of whose peaks top 14,000 feet. Durango is best known for the narrow gauge railroad linking it with Silverton, and it is the largest town in southwest Colorado.
The town is friendly and down to earth, and its historic downtown is easy to cover on foot or by bike. It also serves as a starting point for the San Juan National Forest, Mesa Verde country and the mountain passes east and north of town.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
