Eastern Kenya runs from the wet Mount Kenya foothills at Meru and Embu out to semi-arid plains at Isiolo, Marsabit and the Somali border. The green western edge is farmland and small towns with a few days' worth of walks and markets; the north and east are long, hot drives with sparse services. Most travellers see it in transit to Samburu or Marsabit, or skip it. Go if you want the road less travelled and can accept slow, rough transport and limited lodging; otherwise spend the days in the Mara, Amboseli or on the coast.

Night sequences

2 nights: Meru or Embu 2 nights from Nairobi, Mount Kenya foothill walks and markets
3 nights: Isiolo 1 + Marsabit 2, driving the A2 north with a 4x4
5 nights: Meru 2 + Isiolo 1 + Marsabit 2, then continue to Samburu or back to Nairobi

Long drives on the A2 north of Isiolo: rough surfaces, livestock on the road, no fuel or clinics for hours.
Do not drive after dark outside towns; unlit roads, animals and lorries.
Check your government's travel advice for Garissa, Wajir and the Moyale border before committing to those routes.
Rain can make dirt roads impassable in the long rains; ask locally before leaving tarmac.
