- East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
- East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
- Taiwan ↗Check visa-exemption length, passport validity and the online arrival card (TWAC) on the official sites before you fly.
- Taiwan ↗An EasyCard (or iPASS) covers MRT, buses, local trains and many convenience-store purchases; buy one at the airport or a station.
- Taiwan ↗When a local government declares a typhoon day, transport and sights can close for the day; follow the official notice, not the forecast alone.
Eastern Taiwan is the island's mountain wall: a narrow strip between the Central Mountain Range and the Pacific, running from Yilan in the north through Hualien to Taitung. It is the slowest part of Taiwan to cross and the least served by fast trains, so it rewards a one-way route rather than a there-and-back. Three nights is the floor; five lets you add the East Rift Valley and a hot spring. With less time, the honest answer is to skip it and keep Taipei as your base.

Night sequences
- 3 nights
- Hualien 2 (Taroko day) + Taitung 1, exit south by train
- 5 nights
- Yilan 1 + Hualien 2 + Taitung 2, one-way north to south
- Crossing the island to the west (to Taichung or Kaohsiung) means the Central Cross-Island Highway or the southern route via Pingtung — both are long and weather-dependent.
- Public transport between the small coastal stops is thin; without a car or scooter, plan around the TRA stations.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taroko Gorge | Hualien | 60 min | unknown | Bus and shuttle access has been limited since the 2024 earthquake and typhoon damage — check current closures before you go. |
| Yuli and the East Rift Valley | Hualien | 75 min | unknown | TRA train down the valley; bikes are the practical way to reach the rice fields. |
| Qingshui Cliff | Hualien | 40 min | unknown | Coastal viewpoint on the Suhua Highway; easiest with a car or a tour. |
Bags between cities
There is no practical luggage-forwarding habit on the east coast; carry your bag or leave it at your Hualien or Taitung hotel between stops.

- East coast (Yilan to Taitung)
- Yilan is one of the wettest parts of Taiwan year-round; the south end (Taitung) is drier. Typhoons July–September can close roads and cancel trains.
October–November and March–May are the steadiest windows. Summer is hot and storm-prone; winter is mild but grey in the north of the region.
