At a glance: where to go by passport, month and budget

Ethiopia's open, easy circuit in 2026 runs east and south of Addis Ababa. The historic north is a separate decision: it is under advice against all travel from the UK and US, and Lalibela has had no flights since 24 September 2026. Check your own government's advice before booking anything in Amhara or Tigray.

The table below sorts the main places by who they suit, the best months and a rough nightly cost band. Prices are 2026 estimates in US dollars for a mid-range room or a guided day; budget guesthouses and camps run lower, lodges higher.

Step by step: building the trip

Start with Addis Ababa. Two or three nights covers the National Museum and Lucy, Merkato, Entoto and the coffee scene, and it is where every domestic flight begins. If your visit lands on Meskel in late September, the bonfire and celebrations are in the capital.

Then pick one direction rather than both. East: fly Addis–Dire Dawa, drive about an hour to Harar, and give the walled city two or three nights for its lanes, markets and the nightly hyena feeding. You can ride the railway one way instead of flying.

South: fly to Arba Minch for Lake Chamo crocodiles, Nechisar park and the Dorze highlands, add a night in Konso for the UNESCO terraces, then continue into the South Omo Valley with a 4x4, driver and guide — Turmi and Jinka are the usual bases, and market days set the rhythm. Fly back from Jinka (check schedules).

If you have two weeks, add the Bale Mountains for Ethiopian wolves and cloud forest, and a couple of nights on the Rift Valley lakes at Langano or Hawassa. Bale nights drop below freezing, so pack a warm layer.

Whatever the route, keep one buffer night in Addis before flying home. Domestic flights move, and the buffer is cheaper than a missed international connection.

  • 7 days: Addis Ababa (3) → Dire Dawa → Harar (3) → Addis Ababa (1)
  • 10 days: Addis Ababa (2) → Arba Minch (2) → Konso (1) → Turmi (2) → Jinka (2) → Addis Ababa (1)
  • 14 days: Addis Ababa (2) → Langano (2) → Bale Mountains (3) → Hawassa (2) → Addis Ababa (1) → Harar (3) → Addis Ababa (1)

Notes before you go

The north is the one thing to leave out for now. Lalibela, Gondar, Axum and the Simien Mountains sit inside Amhara and Tigray, which are under advice against all travel from the UK and US in late 2026, and flights to Lalibela were suspended on 24 September 2026. If that changes, the rock-hewn churches and the Simien trekking are the classic Ethiopian trip — but not this year.

The south and east need a guide and a vehicle for the Omo Valley in particular; arrange both before you fly, and agree the price and route in writing. Domestic flights are the fastest way between regions; road days are long and slow.

Altitude is real: Addis sits around 2,350 m and Bale goes higher, so take the first day easy. Carry cash in birr for markets and small towns, and check your government's current travel advice and your insurance cover before booking.
