Give Fairfax City one night, or a half-day in Old Town, and base in Arlington or Washington DC: it is a suburb, not a sightseeing city.

Fairfax City is a small independent city inside Fairfax County, 20 miles west of Washington DC, with a compact four-block Old Town, a 19th-century courthouse and a museum in an 1873 schoolhouse. Most travellers use it as a cheaper bed near the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metro stop, or stop for two hours on the way to Shenandoah. The big draws of the area — Tysons malls, Great Falls, Mount Vernon — sit outside the city line.

About Fairfax, Virginia

Fairfax, which residents often call Fairfax City, serves as the seat of Fairfax County in Virginia. It lies west of Washington DC, with US-50 and US-29 meeting inside the city and I-66 skirting its edge. The downtown core measures four blocks by two, and free parking lots sit within a five-minute walk of every building. Unlike the newer, more uniform suburbs around it, the city keeps a character of its own. Its roots reach back to the 1700s, and the Fairfax County Courthouse, in use since 1800, anchors the historic district. Most visitors arrive via the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metro station, the Orange line's western end, then take a CUE bus into town.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Old Town is 4 blocks by 2 blocks and made for walking; park free and walk. Outside it, Fairfax is car country: US-50 and US-29 merge as Fairfax Boulevard, VA-123 and VA-236 (Main Street) cross the city, and I-66 runs along the edge. The CUE bus links George Mason University, the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU Metro station and points in the city; GMU students, staff and faculty ride free with ID. Metro does not enter the city.

Watch out

Safety

Fairfax City is a low-crime, well-lit suburb and safe to walk in Old Town by day and early evening. The real risks are traffic on US-50/US-29, unlit crossings outside the centre, and summer heat.
  • No Metro station in the city: you need a car, a bus or a taxi from Vienna/Fairfax-GMU.
  • Rush hour on I-66 and US-50 is heavy; add 20–30 min to any DC-bound drive between 06:30–09:30 and 15:30–18:30.
  • Summer is hot and humid; winter brings occasional ice on pavements and steps.
  • Prices in shops and menus are before Virginia sales tax; restaurants expect 18–22% tips.
