Getting around Falkland Islands: trains, buses, driving and domestic flights

There are no trains and no public buses. FIGAS small planes link Stanley to the outer islands and are the only practical way to reach wildlife lodges; on East Falkland use a rental 4x4 or a guided 4x4 day trip. Book FIGAS seats and lodges together before anything else, for November to February.

Summary by mode, time and cost

The islands are large, the population is small and the road network covers only part of East Falkland. Almost every visitor moves by a mix of FIGAS flights, guided 4x4 and, around Stanley, their own feet.

Distances are short on the map but slow on the ground: gravel, peat and wind set the pace.

Step by step

First, decide whether you are staying on East Falkland or flying out. If you want penguin colonies, albatross colonies or a lodge on a working sheep farm, you need FIGAS, and you need to book it with your lodge, not after. Seats are limited and the schedule is built around demand, so lodges and flights are usually arranged as one package.

Second, lock in your Mount Pleasant transfer. The airport is about 55 km from Stanley and there is no public transport; pre-book the shuttle or a taxi, because few vehicles wait on spec.

Third, plan your East Falkland days. A rental 4x4 gives you the most freedom on the gravel roads, but the last stretch to Volunteer Point crosses peat and should be done with a guide. For a single big day out, a guided 4x4 trip is simpler and safer than self-driving.

Fourth, if you are heading to West Falkland with a vehicle, book the ferry early. Sailings are limited and the crossing takes about 2 h.

Finally, keep a weather buffer. FIGAS flights are set the evening before and delays are normal, so never book a same-day international connection after an island flight.

  • Book FIGAS seats and lodge beds together, months ahead for November–February.
  • Pre-book the Mount Pleasant–Stanley shuttle or taxi.
  • Reserve a rental 4x4 early; the fleet is small.
  • Book the East–West ferry if you are taking a vehicle.
  • Leave at least one spare day before any onward flight.

Notes

Baggage on FIGAS is tightly limited, around 14 kg per person (check), and soft bags are easier to load. Pack for wind and rain rather than for a city: layers, waterproofs and sturdy boots.

Driving is on the left. Roads outside Stanley are mostly gravel, with gates that must be left as you find them, and livestock has right of way. Fuel is available in Stanley; plan any long loop around that.

Walking is genuinely useful in and around Stanley, including to Gypsy Cove and the Cape Pembroke lighthouse. Stay on marked paths near old minefield areas and obey the signs.

There are no toilets in the field, so plan day trips around that. Tap water is safe in Stanley; lodges advise on their own supply. Many shops shut on Sundays, and lodges generally close from about April to October.

Travel insurance should cover remote-area evacuation and small-aircraft flights; standard policies often exclude both.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What is the best way to get around Falkland Islands?

For the outer islands, FIGAS small planes from Stanley are the only practical option, usually booked with your lodge. On East Falkland, use a guided 4x4 day trip or a rental 4x4; around Stanley, walk. There are no trains and no public buses.

Do I need a car in Falkland Islands?

Only if you are basing yourself on East Falkland and want to explore independently. A rental 4x4 costs about £80–120 a day (check) and the fleet is small, so book early. In Stanley itself you can walk everywhere, and guided 4x4 trips cover Volunteer Point.

Are there rail or bus passes for Falkland Islands?

No. The islands have no railways and no public bus network, so no passes exist. Inter-island travel is by FIGAS flights or, for West Falkland, a limited vehicle ferry; around Stanley you walk or take a taxi.

How do I get from Mount Pleasant airport to Stanley?

By pre-booked shuttle or taxi, about 1 h for the roughly 55 km. Expect about £20–30 for the shuttle (check). There is no public transport, and few taxis wait at the airport, so arrange the transfer before you land.

Can I drive to Volunteer Point myself?

Not the final section. The last hour crosses peat off-road and is done with a guide in a 4x4. A guided day trip from Stanley costs about £150–250 per person (check) and takes about 2.5 h each way.

How much luggage can I take on a FIGAS flight?

Around 14 kg per person (check). Soft bags load more easily into the small Britten-Norman Islander aircraft. Confirm the current limit with FIGAS or your lodge when you book.
