The Falkland Islands are a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic, 500 km east of Patagonia; Argentina also claims sovereignty, and the islands set their own entry rules. Access is the whole planning problem: one scheduled flight a week from Chile, an occasional UK airbridge, small inter-island planes and lodges with a handful of rooms. Book the international flight, the FIGAS inter-island seats and the lodges as one package, go in the southern summer for penguins and albatrosses, and keep a weather buffer before the flight out.

An archipelago of about 740 islands and 3,700 people, a British Overseas Territory since 1833 and claimed by Argentina as the Islas Malvinas. The 1982 war shaped modern life; fishing licences (squid and toothfish), sheep farming and tourism fund a small, wealthy community.

The Falkland Islands Government sets its own immigration rules. Visitors get a visitor permit on arrival, normally for up to one month, if they hold a return ticket, pre-booked accommodation, enough funds and medical insurance with evacuation cover. Most Western passports need no visa; a short list of nationalities must apply in advance — check. Because the only regular flight passes through Chile, you also need Chilean entry permission.

Safety

Driving is on the left; outside Stanley most roads are gravel tracks, and off-road driving to Volunteer Point needs a local guide.
Wind and cold: even in summer, carry waterproofs and warm layers; wind chill and strong UV together burn and chill you on the same day.
The islands were declared free of landmines in November 2020, but respect any remaining warning signs and local guidance on old military sites.
Medical facilities are limited to Stanley's hospital; serious cases need evacuation, so carry insurance that covers it.

Entry rules are set by the Falkland Islands Government, not the UK: visitors need a return ticket, pre-booked accommodation, enough funds and medical insurance covering evacuation. Check the official rules for your passport.
Keep at least 6 m from penguins and seals, stay out of marked colonies, and follow landowners' rules: most land is privately owned farmland.
Strict biosecurity: declare food, plants, seeds and soil; clean boots and outdoor gear before arrival and before landing on each outer island.

Etiquette

Always ask permission before crossing farmland and close gates behind you.
Keep your distance from wildlife and never block penguins' paths to the sea.
The sovereignty question is sensitive: be respectful in conversation.

Seven hundred islands of peat, grass and rock in the South Atlantic, home to 3,700 people and a million penguins. The five chapters explain the contested history, the 1982 war, the wildlife that draws visitors, life in 'camp', and how the islands pay their way.

1Contested islands1 min

No people lived on the Falklands before Europeans. French settlers founded Port Louis on East Falkland in 1764; the British built Port Egmont on Saunders Island in 1765. France handed its colony to Spain, and Britain withdrew in 1774, leaving a plaque claiming possession. After independence, the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata — later Argentina — sent a governor in the 1820s.

Britain returned in 1833 and has governed the islands ever since. Argentina has never dropped its claim to the Islas Malvinas, which is written into its constitution. Islanders, mostly of British descent, have consistently chosen British rule, most clearly in the 2013 referendum where 99.8% voted to remain a British Overseas Territory.

2The 1982 war1 min

On 2 April 1982 Argentine forces landed and took Stanley. Britain sent a task force 12,000 km south; after naval and air battles and fighting across East Falkland — Goose Green, Mount Longdon, Tumbledown, Wireless Ridge — Argentine forces surrendered on 14 June. 255 British personnel, 649 Argentine personnel and three islanders died.

The war left memorials on every battlefield, an Argentine cemetery at Darwin, a large British garrison at Mount Pleasant and thousands of landmines. A long clearance programme ended in 2020, when the islands were declared free of mines and beaches closed for 38 years reopened. Liberation Day, 14 June, is the main national day.

3Penguins, albatrosses and seals1 min

The islands are one of the richest seabird places on earth. Five penguin species breed: king penguins at Volunteer Point, gentoos and Magellanics widely, rockhoppers on cliff tops and a few macaronis. The black-browed albatross colonies on Steeple Jason, Beauchene and Saunders hold most of the world population.

Southern elephant seals and South American sea lions haul out on Sea Lion Island, where orcas hunt pups close to shore in late spring. Rat-free islands such as Carcass keep dense songbird populations and the tame, curious striated caracara. Because animals were never hunted by the visitors who watch them, they let people come close — which makes the 6-metre rule matter.

4Life in camp1 min

'Camp' — from the Spanish campo — is everything outside Stanley: sheep farms of thousands of hectares, settlements of a few houses, and outer islands run as family farms that now double as wildlife lodges. Children in camp learned by radio and travelling teachers; the inter-island planes of FIGAS carry mail, supplies and people.

Peat was the fuel of the islands for 150 years, and peat cutting still has a public holiday. Horses, sheepdogs and gaucho-era words survive from the 19th-century cattle days. Islanders gather in Stanley at Christmas for the races and sports, and the Camp Day holiday on 27 December is built around them.

5Squid, fish and a small rich state1 min

Since fishing licences were introduced in 1987, selling access to the Loligo and Illex squid and toothfish grounds has made the islands wealthy for their size. Wool and meat, tourism and a planned offshore oil field (the Sea Lion development — check its status) are the other pillars.

Tourism is mostly cruise day visits in the southern summer, plus a few thousand land visitors a year who stay in lodges. The islands cap growth to protect colonies and small infrastructure, which keeps prices high and crowds low.
