- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.
The Foothills are the wide transition band where the Rockies flatten into the plains, running northwest to southeast through Central Alberta. There is no single hub: Rocky Mountain House anchors the north with fur-trade history and trail access, Sundre the south with the sculpture garden and horse country, and Entwistle the Pembina River valley in between. You need a car. Two or three nights based in one place covers the region; more only if you are riding, fishing or hiking seriously.

Night sequences
- 2 nights
- Rocky Mountain House 2 — historic site, one hike, drive the back roads
- 3 nights
- Rocky Mountain House 2 + Sundre 1 — sculpture garden and horse country
- 4 nights
- Add a Pembina River day from Entwistle and a night in Edson if heading west on the Yellowhead
- Distances between sights are long and fuel stops are sparse on the back roads; fill up in town.
- Backcountry here is real backcountry — go with someone experienced or hire a guide.
- Winter driving on secondary roads is icy and some recreation areas close for the season.

- Short warm season June–September; July and August are the only reliably comfortable months for camping and river tubing. Chinooks can break winter cold for a few days. Snow is possible in the hills from October.
Summer is also wildfire season in Alberta; smoke and closures can change plans with little notice. Check Alberta wildfire status before a backcountry trip.
