Grande Prairie
Give Grande Prairie one night as a Peace Country base: the dinosaur museum and Muskoseepi Park trails fill a day, and Highway 43 runs on to the Alaska Highway.
Grande Prairie is the largest city in the Peace Country, about 456 km northwest of Edmonton on Highway 43, with a regional airport and daily bus links. It is a service city for oil, gas, farming and forestry rather than a sightseeing stop, and most travellers use it as a bed and a supply point before or after the Alaska Highway. One full day covers the dinosaur museum, the gallery and the creek trails.

About Grande Prairie
Grande Prairie is a city of more than 63,000 people in Peace River Country, Alberta. It takes its name from the broad prairie stretching north, east and west of the townsite. The city sits at the junction of Highway 43 and Highway 40, roughly 456 km northwest of Edmonton, and is a major centre for travellers heading to the Alaska Highway. Its economy mixes oil and gas, agriculture, forestry and food services, and it serves as a supply and service base for the surrounding region.
The climate is northern continental. Summer days average about 24 °C, though nights stay near 11 °C, and winter brings long cold spells with occasional mild breaks. Daylight runs from 5:15AM to 10:30PM in summer and only 9:15AM to 4:30PM in winter. The regional airport lies 5½ km northwest of the city and is reached by taxi only; daily flights connect from Calgary and Edmonton.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

- Grande Prairie Museum & Heritage Village — A museum and heritage village set in Muskoseepi Park.
- Grant Berg Gallery — Shows original paintings, sculpture, carvings, pottery and Indigenous artworks.
- Muskoseepi Park — 1,100 acres of parkland around the Bear Creek Reservoir, with trails and sports fields.
- Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum — Sits 15 minutes west in Wembley and is named for a University of Alberta researcher who studied the dinosaur-bird link.
Do
- Walk the trails in Muskoseepi Park around the Bear Creek Reservoir.
- Follow the 7-km paved biking trail along Bear Creek from behind Northwestern Polytechnic.
- Swim or use the courts at Eastlink Centre, which has a 50-metre pool and water slides.
- Try the FlowRider simulated surfing at Eastlink Centre.
Customs
- The city's name comes from the prairie surrounding it on three sides.
- Settlement came late compared with farming regions further south because the Edson Trail was rough going, especially in wet weather.
- The Peace Region escaped the drought that hit the southern prairies in the 1930s, so settlement continued through the Dust Bowl years.
