Grants Pass

Give Grants Pass 1 night as an I-5 stop, or 2 if you want a Rogue River jetboat run: the town itself is a half-day.
Grants Pass is a small Southern Oregon town on Interstate 5, about 2 h 45 min by car from Eugene and 30 min from Medford. Its draw is the Rogue River: jetboat rides, rafting and riverside parks. Downtown is walkable in an hour; the rest of the town is strip-mall driving. Most travellers pass through on the I-5 corridor or use it as a base for the Oregon Caves and the redwood coast road.

About Grants Pass
Grants Pass is a city in Southern Oregon whose slogan is "It's the Climate." It sits on Interstate 5, with the highway's westernmost stretch in the continental United States running through the area, and it is reached via Exits 55 and 58. The town is known for its caveman statue, which was vandalized in early 2005 and later returned to its pedestal near NW Sixth St. and Morgan St. It also has a reputation as one of the most caffeinated cities in Southern Oregon, being the origin of Dutch Bros., whose stickers appear on many car bumpers and windows. The Rogue River runs through town, with parks along its banks and jetboat and rafting trips departing from the area.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: sights and motels sit 2–5 km apart along 6th and 7th St. Josephine Community Transit (JCT) runs local buses with a single downtown transfer stop at NE 6th Ave and B St, plus routes to Cave Junction, Merlin and Medford. Taxis exist but are few; rideshare coverage is thin. Downtown itself is walkable.

Watch out
Safety
- Summer wildfire smoke can cancel river trips and close trails: check air quality before booking.
- Some downtown and riverside parks see drug use after dark: keep to lit streets at night.
- Property crime is a real issue in town and in rural Josephine County: do not leave bags visible in a parked car.
- Rural county roads are poorly lit and emergency response is slow: avoid unfamiliar back roads after dark.
- Greyhound does not sell tickets at the local stop: buy and print online before you arrive.
