Best places to visit in Greece: top cities, regions and sights

For a first trip, visit Athens (2–3 nights), then pick one island group: Naxos plus Santorini, or Crete on its own for 4–7 nights. Add Nafplio, Delphi or Meteora if you have 10+ days. Skip five-island hops in ten days — ferries eat the trip.

Passport: EU/EEA, UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand passports enter visa-free for short stays; check the current Schengen 90/180-day rule and any ETIAS start date before booking (check). Costs are 2026 estimates; island prices rise sharply in Jul–Aug.

How to choose, step by step

Step 1: fix your length. Seven days supports Athens plus two Cyclades islands. Ten days adds Crete. Fourteen days lets you add Delphi and Meteora on the mainland before the islands. Twenty-one days is the only length where a long loop — Peloponnese, north, then islands — makes sense.

Step 2: pick one island line and follow it. From Athens, ferries leave Piraeus and Rafina for the Cyclades. A common chain is Naxos → Santorini, or Paros → Naxos → Santorini. Crete is a fast ferry from Santorini or a flight from Athens; treat it as its own trip rather than a stop-off.

Step 3: match the place to the season. Athens and the mainland are best April–June and September–November. The Cyclades run May–October. Santorini and Mykonos are at their worst in July–August for crowds, heat and prices; late September to October is the better window.

Step 4: decide island style. Naxos and Paros suit beaches plus villages and are the easiest first islands. Milos is quieter and best seen by boat. Santorini is for the caldera view and should be short. Mykonos is for nightlife and beach clubs, not for a quiet base.

Step 5: add mainland sights only if the days exist. Nafplio works as a two-night base for Mycenae and Epidaurus. Delphi is one night. Meteora is one to two nights and pairs with a car. Thessaloniki is a two-night city stop and the gateway to northern Greece.

Step 6: book the expensive parts first. In July–August, book ferries and island beds early, and keep a spare day before any international flight home.

  • 7 days: Athens 2 → Naxos 3 → Santorini 2
  • 10 days: Athens 2 → Naxos 3 → Santorini 2 → Heraklion or Chania 3
  • 14 days: Athens 3 → Delphi 1 → Meteora 2 → Paros 3 → Santorini 2 → Chania 3
  • 21 days: Athens 3 → Nafplio 2 → Olympia 1 → Delphi 1 → Meteora 2 → Thessaloniki 2 → islands

Notes and common mistakes

The main mistake is island count. Each ferry hop costs half a day with port transfers, so five islands in ten days means you mostly see harbours. Two islands done properly beat five done badly.

The second mistake is timing. July and August bring 35 °C-plus days, full ferries and peak prices on Santorini and Mykonos. May, June, late September and October give the same scenery with fewer people.

The third is treating Crete as a day trip. West Crete alone — Chania, Balos, Samaria — needs four to seven nights, and the island is large enough that you should pick a region rather than try to circle it.

Practical points: the Acropolis and major museums are busiest at opening; buy timed tickets ahead in summer (check). Meteora monasteries have dress rules and set visiting days, so check before you drive there (check). Some archaeological sites close early or run reduced winter hours (check).

Greece is generally a low-risk destination for travellers, but keep an eye on your bags on crowded ferries and in Athens tourist areas, and check current advice before you go.

Questions people ask

What are the best places to visit in Greece?

Athens for 2–3 nights, then one island group: Naxos plus Santorini, or Crete on its own for 4–7 nights. With more time add Nafplio, Delphi or Meteora on the mainland, and Thessaloniki in the north.

How many days do you need in Greece?

Seven days covers Athens and two Cyclades islands. Ten days adds Crete. Fourteen days allows Delphi and Meteora plus islands. Under seven days, stay on the mainland or pick a single island.

Which areas of Greece suit a first visit?

Athens and Attica, the Cyclades (Naxos, Paros, Santorini, Milos) and Crete. These have the best ferry links, the most English-language services and the widest choice of beds.

Is Santorini worth it, or is it overrated?

It is worth two or three nights for the caldera, but it is crowded and expensive in July–August. Go in May–June or late September–October, and treat it as a short stop rather than your main base.

Should I visit the mainland or the islands?

Do both if you have ten days or more. The mainland gives Athens, Delphi, Meteora, Nafplio and Thessaloniki; the islands give beaches and village life. Ferries connect them from Piraeus and Rafina.

When is the best time to visit Greece?

April–June and September–November for the mainland, May–October for the islands. July and August are hottest, busiest and priciest, especially on Santorini and Mykonos.
