Go for one night, or a half-day from Kingston: the lighthouse, Foulweather Bluff and sandy beach take 3–4 hours. No town centre, no nightlife.

Hansville sits on the northern tip of the Kitsap Peninsula, about 25 minutes by car from the Kingston ferry. It is a small rural community with a lighthouse, a county park, a nature preserve and low rainfall for the region. There is one grocery store with a grill, a handful of rental houses and no hotel strip. Most travellers come for a half-day or one quiet night, not a multi-day base.

About Hansville

Hansville is a rural community at the northern end of the Kitsap Peninsula, in the Puget Sound area of Washington state. It looks out over Admiralty Inlet, Whidbey Island and Puget Sound, and gets less rain than much of the surrounding region, which suits outdoor activity. The Hansville Highway, reached from State Route 104, is the main road in. Boats can also arrive at Eglon, Cliffside, Shorewood, Driftwood Key, Skunk Bay, Norwegian Point or a private dock on the Twin Spits side of the canal.

The town has a grocery store with a grill, a county park, a nature preserve and two lighthouses, one of them the oldest on Puget Sound. Point No Point County Park is recognised for birds using the Pacific Flyway. Visitors reach it by car or by boat, and Kitsap Transit connects the area with ferry terminals and neighbouring counties.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Do

  • Watch wildlife and birds, especially at Point No Point County Park, which the Audubon Society designated an Important Bird Area on the Pacific Flyway.
  • Launch a sea kayak for Hood Canal and the main channels of Puget Sound; the launch near Hansville is the northernmost point of the Kitsap Peninsula Water Trails.
  • Walk the sandy beaches around the lighthouse and watch boat traffic; shells and driftwood should be left in place.
  • Dig for clams and oysters where permitted, such as the Foulweather Bluff shellfishing beach, which is reachable by boat only.

Eat and drink

Specialities of this place.

  • The Hansgrill — A small sit-down restaurant attached to Hansville Grocery, with beer and wine and outdoor seating in good weather.
  • Hansville Grocery — A neighbourhood store selling sandwiches, burgers and ice cream, useful for restocking or picnic supplies.
  • The Point Casino — Located between Hansville and Kingston, it has a restaurant and bars.

Customs

  • The Kitsap Audubon Society has met since 1972, tracking and sharing bird sightings and publishing a newsletter and a local bird checklist.
  • Beachcombing etiquette: sea shells and driftwood are part of the natural environment and should not be removed, while artificial items may be taken.
  • Shellfishing in Puget Sound requires a permit, and public harvest areas have boundaries and health advisories posted by the state.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights are 2–5 km apart on rural roads with no pavement in places. Kitsap Transit runs limited service in the area and connects to ferry terminals; full fare is about $2 and it is part of the ORCA network. Bicycles work on the Hansville Highway but shoulders are narrow.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are rural roads with no shoulder, patchy cell signal, cold water and fast tides on the beaches. Tell someone your plan before hiking Foulweather Bluff.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on the back roads and at Foulweather Bluff.
  • Foulweather Bluff has no pets allowed and parking is on the road shoulder only.
  • Skunk Bay Lighthouse is private: view it from the water, not the land.
  • Shellfishing needs a Washington permit and you must check current health closures before digging.
  • Do not remove shells or driftwood from beaches; take only artificial items such as beach glass.
