  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Central Station, Oodi & Kiasma audio walk in Helsinki. 3 stops: Oodi Central Library, Ateneum Art Museum and Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church). Rain-proof cluster: Oodi library, Ateneum and Kiasma are all indoors within ten minutes of the station; use it whenever the harbour is windy or wet.

Central Station and Oodi north to Kiasma, east to the Ateneum, south to Kluuvikatu and Kamppi. Underfoot: paved city streets; slope: flat; shade: medium.

Helsinki is a capital built to order. It was moved, designed and dressed as a stage-set in the 1810s, and it has kept reinventing itself around the sea, the sauna and Finnish design ever since.

Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. Oodi Central Library

    Oodi

Stop 1 of 3: Oodi Central Library. Locally, Oodi.

A free public library with cafés, a rooftop terrace and reading rooms; use it as an indoor rest stop for 45–75 minutes on a wet or cold day.

From the 1960s came the Temppeliaukio Church, blasted into a granite outcrop by the Suomalainen brothers, and, more recently, Kiasma museum (1998), Oodi library (2018) and the wooden Löyly sauna (2016). If you are short of time, take a tram past the Jugend blocks in Eira, walk Senate Square to Uspenski, and finish with a look at Oodi's wooden curve.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Ateneum Art Museum. It's about 10 minutes on foot. Route: Walk via Kiasma and Mannerheimintie. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

    Ateneum

Stop 2 of 3: Ateneum Art Museum. Locally, Ateneum.

Finnish national gallery for Golden Age paintings; plan 90 minutes on a wet day. Buy a ticket online for busy periods.

Walk:Next, stop 3: Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church). We have no walking time for this leg yet, so check your map. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church)

    Temppeliaukion kirkko

Stop 3 of 3: Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church). Locally, Temppeliaukion kirkko. Arrival point: Walk about 20 minutes from Kamppi, or take a tram towards Töölö and walk a few minutes.

A Lutheran church blasted into solid granite, with a copper-wire dome and natural rock walls: a 20–30 minute indoor stop north-west of Kamppi, best combined with a walk to Hietaniemi or the Sibelius Monument.

Do not enter during a service or a wedding; keep voices low. Tour groups arrive in waves around mid-morning and early afternoon; early and late are quieter. Quiet voices; no visiting during services. This is a working church: visiting is not possible during services, weddings or concerts. It is popular, so expect a short entrance queue at midday in summer. Photography is fine when no service is on; keep flash off. Is there an entry fee? Yes for visitors, paid at the entrance; check the current amount and whether cards are accepted.
