Helsinki is a compact harbour city: do Senate Square and the market before lunch, a library or museum when it rains, and finish the day in a public sauna — book the sauna slot before you land.
Helsinki's sights sit within about two kilometres of the Central Station, so distance is not the problem; light and weather are. December gives around six hours of daylight, June barely gets dark, and wind on the harbour turns the Suomenlinna ferry into a cold ride outside summer. Trams reach everywhere. Four clusters cover a first visit, and Porvoo or Tallinn are day trips from one kept bed.

- Personal space: Finns value quiet and personal space; do not sit next to a stranger when there are empty seats, and keep small talk short.
- Sauna: Shower first; no street clothes in the steam room; follow the swimwear rule of the venue; speak softly.
- Queues: Take a number where there is a ticket machine and keep a comfortable distance.
- Punctuality: Be on time; a table or a sauna slot is held for only a few minutes.
- Tipping: Not expected; rounding up is polite for good service.
- Alcohol in public: Fine in parks in moderation; drunkenness on trams draws stares.

- Uspenski and Helsinki Cathedral are working churches: keep voices low and follow the signs about photography during services.
