HomerHomer, Alaska
Give Homer 2–3 nights: one full day on the Spit and harbor, one for the town, trails and museum. Skip it as a day trip from Anchorage — the drive is 4–5 h each way.
Homer sits at the end of the Sterling Highway on the Kenai Peninsula, on Kachemak Bay. The Spit — a 4-mile sandbar with the harbor, charters and shops — is the tourist core, but the town itself, up on the bluff, is where people live. Most visitors come for halibut fishing, wildlife boats and the view back over the bay.

About Homer
Homer is a city on the Kenai Peninsula in Southcentral Alaska, at the end of the Sterling Highway. It is known as the "Halibut Fishing Capital of the World" and as the "End of the Road". The highway ends at the tip of the Homer Spit, a natural sandbar that reaches about four miles into Kachemak Bay. The Spit holds the harbor and most tourist activity, but the town itself, with more than 5,800 residents in 2018, sits apart from it; only a dozen or so people live on the Spit year-round.
The most westerly point on the contiguous North American highway system lies nearby at Anchor Point, where the road turns southeast toward Homer. The town is reached by daily flights from Anchorage, by a drive of four to five hours, by the state ferry system, and by cruise ships docking at the Deep Water Dock.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
