Hong Kong is a weather-first city: do the Peak and temples on a clear morning, hide in AC malls at midday in summer, take the harbour and the markets after 17:00 — and check for typhoon signals every day from June to October.
Hong Kong Island and Kowloon are compact, hilly and hot. Distances are short but stairs, slopes and humidity are not: the Central–Mid-Levels area is a climb, the Peak is a tram or a steep road, and July to September brings heat, storms and typhoon signals. Four clusters cover a first visit from one kept bed. The ones that go wrong bring big suitcases onto rush-hour MTR, plan the Peak on a hazy day, or walk in the midday sun.

Get around
Walk inside a cluster, ride the MTR between clusters, take the Star Ferry or tram for the view, and a taxi with bags or after midnight. Octopus works on nearly everything.

Language
Cantonese is the spoken language, written in Traditional Chinese characters; English is official and works in hotels, shops, the MTR and with most people under 50. Mandarin is widely understood. Street signs, MTR and menus in tourist areas are bilingual; small restaurants and minibuses often are not. Romanisation below is Jyutping: the number after each syllable is the tone (Cantonese has six).
- Hello — 你好 (nei5 hou2); 'mm-goi' is the everyday word you will use most: 唔該 (m4 goi1) — thanks for a service, excuse me, please.
- Thank you for a gift — 多謝 (do1 ze6). Sorry / excuse me — 唔好意思 (m4 hou2 ji3 si1).
- How much? — 幾多錢？ (gei2 do1 cin2). The bill, please — 唔該埋單 (m4 goi1 maai4 daan1).
- I want this one — 我要呢個 (ngo5 jiu3 ni1 go3). No ice — 走冰 (zau2 bing1). No sugar — 走甜 (zau2 tim4).
- Where is ...? — ...喺邊度？ (hai2 bin1 dou6). Toilet — 洗手間 (sai2 sau2 gaan1).
- Stop here (minibus, taxi) — 有落 (jau5 lok6) / 呢度停 (ni1 dou6 ting4). Yes — 係 (hai6); no — 唔係 (m4 hai6).
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Temples: Do not point at statues, do not step on thresholds, and avoid photographing worshippers at close range.
- MTR: Stand on the right of escalators, let people off first, and do not eat or drink on the train.
- Dim sum: Tap two fingers on the table to thank someone who pours your tea.
- Chopsticks: Do not stick chopsticks upright in rice; place them across the bowl.
- Tipping: A 10 percent service charge is often added; extra tip is not expected.
- Queueing: Queue politely for buses and ferries; push-in is rare.
Red lines
- No eating or drinking on the MTR.
- Temples: do not point at statues, do not step on thresholds.
- Do not photograph people at close range in markets without asking.
Scams (Hong Kong page)
- Fake monks selling blessings: Real monks in Hong Kong do not solicit on the street; do not take the amulet or bracelet.
- Bait-and-switch electronics and camera shops: Buy at chains (Fortress, Broadway) or official brand stores; check the box contents and warranty region before paying.
- Tailor and 'copy watch' touts: Ignore street touts; counterfeit goods are illegal to sell and can be seized.
- Taxi detours and overcharging: Taxis are metered; tolls and luggage fees are listed on the window. Note the licence number; complaints go to the Transport Complaints Unit.
- Phone and messaging fraud: Hong Kong police never ask for money by phone; hang up and call 18222 (Anti-Scam Helpline).
- Unlicensed guesthouses: Guesthouses need a licence number shown on the door; unlicensed ones can be closed with you inside.
