Best places to visit in Hungary: top cities, regions and sights
Go to Budapest first: 3–4 nights covers Parliament, Castle Hill and the baths. Add the Danube Bend as a day trip, or 2 nights at Lake Balaton, Eger or Tokaj if you have a week. Skip the long detours on a first trip under 5 days — every route runs through Budapest anyway.

Summary by passport, month and cost
Use the table to pick a season and a rough budget, then read the detail below. Costs are 2026 estimates for one person per day, mid-range: a private room, public transport and one paid sight. Hungary uses the forint (HUF); cards work almost everywhere in cities.
Passport column is about entry, not preference: EU/EEA and UK passports enter visa-free, US, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and Irish passports also enter visa-free for short stays. Confirm current rules before booking — see the visa page.
| Passport | Entry for tourism | Best months | Rough daily cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| US / Canada / Australia / NZ / Ireland / UK | Visa-free short stay (check current rules) | Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct | €70–120 (2026 estimate) |

The places, in the order most people should see them
Budapest is the anchor. Parliament, Castle Hill with Matthias Church and Fishermen's Bastion, St Stephen's Basilica, the Dohány utca Great Synagogue and the thermal baths (Széchenyi, Rudas, Király) fill three or four days without rushing. Parliament tours sell out, so book online days ahead. The Gellért Baths have been closed for a long renovation — check before you build a day around them.
The Danube Bend is the easiest add-on: Szentendre is about 40 minutes from Budapest by suburban rail, and Visegrád and Esztergom sit further up the river. One long day by bus and train, or one night if you want the citadel at Visegrád without watching the clock.
Eger suits a 1–2 night stop: the castle, the minaret (the northernmost surviving Ottoman minaret in Europe), baths and the wine cellars of the Valley of Beautiful Women. Tokaj, further east, is a small village at the centre of the sweet-wine region — one night of cellars and tastings is usually enough.
Lake Balaton needs 2–3 nights and is a summer place: beaches, the Tihany peninsula and the wine hills on the north shore. Balatonfüred, Siófok, Keszthely and Hévíz (thermal lake) are the usual bases. Outside June–August it is quiet and some services close.
Pécs, in the south, is the strongest non-Budapest city for history: Ottoman mosques including the Mosque of Pasha Qasim, early Christian tombs and the Zsolnay quarter. Two nights. Debrecen and the Hortobágy plain work as an eastern extension, and Győr and Sopron are the natural stops if you are coming from or going to Vienna.
| Place | Nights | Best months | Why go |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budapest | 3–4 | Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct | Parliament, Castle Hill, baths, ruin bars |
| Danube Bend (Szentendre, Visegrád, Esztergom) | 0–1 | May–Sep | River towns and the Visegrád citadel |
| Eger | 1–2 | May–Oct | Castle, baths, wine cellars |
| Lake Balaton | 2–3 | Jun–Aug | Beaches, Tihany, wine hills |
| Tokaj | 1 | May–Oct | Sweet-wine cellars |
| Pécs | 2 | Apr–Oct | Mosques, tombs, Zsolnay quarter |
| Debrecen and Hortobágy | 1–2 | Apr–Oct | Calvinist city, plain and birdlife |
| Győr / Sopron | 1 | Apr–Oct | Baroque towns on the Vienna route |
Notes before you commit
Every route in the country runs through Budapest, so build the trip as spokes from the capital rather than a loop. Trains cover Budapest–Eger, Budapest–Pécs, Budapest–Szeged, Budapest–Győr and the Balaton line; the north shore of Balaton and the smaller Danube Bend stops are easier by car or bus.
Two traps: planning Balaton in May or October and finding half the lake shut, and trying to fit Budapest, Balaton, Eger and Pécs into five days. Pick one add-on per three days outside the capital.
Bath etiquette is simple: bring or rent a towel, shower before entering the pools, and expect mixed-gender areas at Széchenyi and single-sex days at Rudas — check the day's schedule. Carry some forint for markets and small village businesses; cards are fine in cities.
- Book Parliament tours online days ahead.
- Check the Gellért Baths renovation status before planning around it.
- Balaton is a June–August destination; expect closures outside it.
- Rudas has single-sex days — check the schedule.
- Keep some cash (HUF) for villages and markets.

Questions people ask
What are the best places to visit in Hungary?
Budapest first (3–4 nights), then one of the Danube Bend as a day trip, Lake Balaton (2–3 nights, summer), Eger (1–2 nights) or Tokaj (1 night). Pécs (2 nights) is the best southern city for Ottoman and early Christian history.
How many days do you need in Hungary?
Three to four nights covers Budapest. A week adds one region — Eger and Tokaj, or Balaton in summer. Ten days fits Budapest, the Danube Bend, Balaton and Pécs. Under five days, stay in Budapest and take day trips.
Which areas of Hungary suit a first visit?
Budapest and the Danube Bend. They are close together, reachable by train or suburban rail, and cover the landmarks most people come for. Add Balaton or Eger only if you have a week or more.
Is Lake Balaton worth it outside summer?
Less so. Beaches, boat services and many restaurants run June–August; by October the lake is quiet and some places close. If you want the wine hills rather than swimming, late September still works.
Do I need a car in Hungary?
No for Budapest, Eger, Pécs, Szeged, Győr and the main Balaton line — trains and buses cover them. A car helps for the Balaton north shore, the smaller Danube Bend stops and Hortobágy.
How much does a trip to Hungary cost?
Roughly €70–120 per person per day mid-range in 2026, covering a private room, transport and one paid sight. Hostels and self-catering bring it to €40–60; peak Balaton pushes it higher.
