Go for 2–3 nights in Jul–Aug if you want Arctic tundra and Inuit art; skip Dec–Feb unless you are coming for dark skies and dog sledding.

Iqaluit is Nunavut's capital and the main air gateway to Baffin Island, with no road link to anywhere else. It is small enough to walk in a day, but the reason to come is the land and water around it: tundra hikes, boat trips to Thule sites, and winter dog sledding. Flights are the big cost, so most trips are short.

About Iqaluit

Iqaluit is the capital and largest settlement of Nunavut, on a southeastern inlet of Baffin Island. It sits in the Everett Mountains above Koojesse Inlet, part of Frobisher Bay, east of Nunavut's mainland and northeast of Hudson Bay. The name means "place of many fish" in Inuktitut, and Inuit have used the spot as a campsite and fishing ground for thousands of years. The town held just over 7,700 people as of 2016. It is reached only by air, or by sea when ice allows, and has no road connection to any other town. Iqaluit serves as the main base for exploring Baffin Island.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

The town is compact and most sights are walkable. Taxis charge a flat per-person fare to anywhere in town. Iqaluit Transit runs buses between the airport and Apex every 45 minutes on weekdays. Bicycles can be rented from the visitor centre in summer. Rental cars and SUVs exist but must be reserved ahead, and can sell out June–November when contractors are in town.

Watch out

Safety

Iqaluit is a small, safe-feeling town, but the real risks are the cold, the dark and the land: winter temperatures drop below −30 °C (−22 °F), and outside town there are few trails and no roads. Tell someone your plan before any hike or snowmobile trip.
  • No road connects Iqaluit to any other town: you arrive by air, or by sea when ice allows.
  • Food and drink cost much more than in southern Canada; budget accordingly.
  • Summer mosquitoes are heavy in July and August: bring repellent.
  • Terrain outside town is rough with few trails and no roads; go with a local guide for anything beyond a short walk.
  • Rental cars must be booked in advance; airport counters are not staffed unless a pickup is scheduled.
  • Winter daylight is very short and January–February are the coldest, darkest months.
