How to choose, step by step

Start with the number of nights you actually have on the ground, not the number of days you are away. Long-haul flights into Nairobi usually land in the evening, so treat arrival day as a buffer and keep one buffer night before the flight home.

Then pick one savanna park and one contrast. The Masai Mara is the default first park: big cats year-round and the migration from July to October. Amboseli gives elephants under Kilimanjaro; Samburu and Laikipia give northern species, rhino and conservancy walking. Pairing one southern park with one northern conservancy is the standard way to see different species without repeating scenery.

Decide whether the coast is worth the transfer. Diani, Watamu and Lamu are 3–5 night destinations, not day trips. If you have 12 days or more, you can add a northern conservancy and still keep a beach; below that, choose one or the other rather than rushing both.

Finally, choose how you move. Flying from Wilson Airport to park airstrips saves a day each way and is the usual choice on short trips. Driving works well for Nairobi, Naivasha and Hell's Gate, and for Amboseli. The SGR train links Nairobi and Mombasa if the coast is on your route.

Regions and cities in detail

Nairobi is the hub: a national park at the city edge, the Giraffe Centre, the Karen Blixen Museum, the national museum and the Sheldrick elephant orphanage, which needs a booked visit. One or two nights is enough, and Karen's sights fit one morning.

The Masai Mara sits south-west, with conservancies bordering the national reserve. Conservancies usually mean fewer vehicles and night drives; the reserve means the classic river-crossing season. Amboseli is south, under Kilimanjaro, and pairs with a Nairobi–Namanga or SGR route. Samburu and Laikipia are north of Mount Kenya, reached via Nanyuki, with rhino and dry-country species.

Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate are about two hours from Nairobi: cycling, boats and Crescent Island, easy to add without a flight. Tsavo East and West sit on the Mombasa line and suit a drive-and-train route.

On the coast, Mombasa has Fort Jesus and the Old Town, plus the SGR terminus. Diani, south of Mombasa, is the main beach base; Watamu and Malindi are north-coast alternatives with a marine park and the Gedi ruins; Lamu is a car-free island town reached by air or a longer road-and-boat route. Kisumu on Lake Victoria is mainly a stop toward Uganda.

Notes before you book

Park and conservancy fees, lodge rates and light-aircraft seats move with season and demand; treat any figure you see as a 2026 estimate and confirm at booking (check).

Wildlife is not on a schedule. The migration window is Jul–Oct, but river crossings happen on specific days, not across the whole season. Big cats are present year-round in the Mara.

Coastal seasons matter: Dec–Mar and Jul–Oct are the drier, busier windows; the long rains fall around Apr–May and some beach and dive operations slow down (check).

Check your entry paperwork early: the eTA should be filed at least a week before you fly, and passport validity rules apply. Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation and safari activities is worth arranging before you pay for lodges.

  • Book the Sheldrick elephant orphanage and any Mara conservancy stay ahead; both fill in peak season.
  • Keep one buffer night in Nairobi before the international flight.
  • If time is short, fly Wilson–airstrip rather than drive; the drive costs a day each way.

Questions people ask

What are the best places to visit in Kenya?

For a first trip: the Masai Mara for big cats, Nairobi for one or two nights, Amboseli or Samburu for a second park, and Diani, Watamu or Lamu for the beach. With 12 days or more you can combine a northern conservancy and the coast.

How many days do you need in Kenya?

Seven days works for Nairobi, Lake Naivasha and the Masai Mara. Ten days adds Amboseli and a short beach stay. Fourteen days allows Samburu or Laikipia, the Mara and five coast nights.

Which areas of Kenya suit a first visit?

Nairobi, the Masai Mara and one coast base. Add Amboseli for elephants or Samburu and Laikipia for northern species and conservancies. Leave Mount Kenya treks and remote northern parks for a second trip.

When is the best time to visit Kenya?

The dry seasons: Jul–Oct and Jan–Feb. The migration falls in Jul–Oct. The long rains around Apr–May bring lower rates and greener parks but more mud and some closed camps.

Should I fly or drive between parks?

Fly from Wilson Airport to park airstrips when time is short; it saves roughly a day each way. Driving suits Nairobi, Naivasha, Hell's Gate and Amboseli. The SGR train links Nairobi and Mombasa.

Is the coast worth adding after a safari?

Yes if you have 3–5 nights to give it. Diani, Watamu and Lamu are destinations in their own right, not day trips. Below 12 days total, choose either the coast or a second park rather than both.
