Kissimmee

Base here 3–5 nights if you want Disney on a budget: US 192 motels and vacation homes cost less than on-park rooms, 10–20 min from the gates.
Kissimmee sits just south of Walt Disney World on US 192, the strip locals call Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway. It is a bed base more than a sight base: cheaper motels, thousands of vacation rentals, dinner shows, airboat rides on the edge of the Everglades headwaters, and a small downtown with a SunRail stop. Choose it to sleep cheap and drive to the parks; skip it if you want to walk everywhere.

About Kissimmee
Kissimmee is a city in Osceola County, Central Florida, sitting just south of Orlando in the area often called "Kissimmee-St. Cloud" because of its closeness to the neighbouring city of St. Cloud. Highway 192, also known as Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway and Vine Street within the city, carries most tourist traffic and links to SR-535, which runs into the Disney World theme parks. The city has drawn visitors since Disney World opened in 1971, and its reputation rests on sunny weather, spring training baseball and its position near the parks.
Most visitor activity clusters along Highway 192, where purple mile marker towers act as reference points; the main Walt Disney World entrance is at mile marker 7. Kissimmee is reachable by plane, car, train and bus, with Orlando International Airport about a 25-minute drive away on I-4 and two daily Amtrak trains plus SunRail commuter service stopping downtown.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is close to essential: US 192 runs west–east through the tourist strip, I-4 and FL-417 link to Orlando and the airport, and Osceola Parkway is a toll road parallel to 192. Lynx buses cost $2 a ride with transfers included but run infrequently. SunRail commuter trains reach downtown Orlando in about 25 min; Amtrak's Silver Star and Silver Meteor stop at the downtown station. Rideshare works for park drop-offs but surges at closing time.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
US 192 / Maingate West
Closest to the Disney gates (mile markers 5–10); motels, chain hotels and the densest restaurant strip. Traffic-heavy but walkable in patches.
US 192 / East of downtown
Cheaper motels and vacation homes 15–25 min from the gates; you need a car for everything.
Downtown Kissimmee (Broadway / Lakefront)
Small historic core with the SunRail and Amtrak station, local restaurants and bars; 25–35 min to Disney.
Vacation-home subdivisions (Poinciana, Four Corners, Storey Lake)
Whole houses with pools, best value for groups of 5+ staying 3+ nights; car essential.
