Step by step: how to build the trip
Step 1: book Riga first. Almost every route starts and ends there, and the airport, buses and trains all meet in the city. Three nights gives you the Old Town, the Art Nouveau streets around Alberta iela and the Central Market without rushing.
- Step 2: add two day trips from Riga. Jūrmala is about 30 minutes by train for the beach and wooden villas; Sigulda is roughly an hour by train for Turaida Castle, the cable car and the Gauja valley.
- Step 3: if you have 7 days, sleep 1–2 nights in Cēsis instead of day-tripping. Sigulda and Cēsis sit in the same valley and link by train or bus.
- Step 4: with 10 days, add Kurzeme. Kuldīga (UNESCO old town, Venta Rapid) and Liepāja (Karosta naval port, beach, music) are the two stops worth the distance; a car makes the coast between them far easier.
- Step 5: with 14 days, run the Baltic line: Tallinn → Riga → Sigulda → Kuldīga → Vilnius, with buses on each leg and a flight home from Riga or Vilnius.
- Step 6: fit Rundāle Palace in as a day from Riga or Bauska if you like baroque interiors; it is a half-day site, not an overnight stop.
- Step 7: keep Daugavpils (second city, Rothko Art Centre in the fortress) and Ventspils for a second trip or a long loop, not a first one.
Notes before you go
Latvia is compact: Riga to Sigulda is about an hour, Riga to Liepāja around three hours by car or bus. That means you can see a lot in a week, but only if you pick one direction instead of zig-zagging.
- Trains and buses are cheap and frequent on the Riga–Jūrmala, Riga–Sigulda and Riga–Cēsis lines; buy tickets at the station or on the operator's app.
- Outside those lines, services thin out in the evening and on Sundays. Check the last departure before you commit to a late day out.
- Kurzeme (Kuldīga, Liepāja, Cape Kolka, Slītere) rewards a car: two or three days, not a rushed day trip.
- Summer weekends fill Jūrmala and Sigulda; book accommodation ahead for June–August.
- Winter is dark by mid-afternoon; plan indoor sights and short walks rather than long drives.
- Carry a card for museums and cafés; cash is rarely needed but useful in small towns.
- Travel insurance is worth arranging before a self-drive trip, especially for the coast roads.
FAQ
Questions people ask
What are the best places to visit in Latvia?
Riga first, with Jūrmala and Sigulda as day trips. Add Cēsis for the Gauja valley, then Kuldīga and Liepāja for Kurzeme. Daugavpils and Ventspils suit a second trip or a longer loop.
How many days do you need in Latvia?

Riga and the Gulf coast, plus the Gauja valley around Sigulda and Cēsis. Both work by train. Kurzeme, the western coast, is better on a second trip or with a rental car.
Is Riga enough on its own?
For a short break, yes: Old Town, Art Nouveau district, Central Market and museums fill two or three days. Most travellers then add one day trip, usually Jūrmala or Sigulda.
Do you need a car in Latvia?
No for Riga, Jūrmala, Sigulda and Cēsis, which are all on rail or bus lines. Yes, or at least a bus, for Kuldīga, Liepāja and the north Kurzeme coast.
When is the best time to visit Latvia?
May to September for the coast, castles and long days. December for Riga's Christmas market. Winter is cold and dark but good for museums and the Ķemeri bog boardwalk.
