Everything the tour says, in order. Read it instead of listening if you prefer.

  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Miraflores audio walk in Lima. 4 stops: Parque Kennedy, Parque del Amor and the Malecón, Huaca Pucllana and Larcomar. Day cluster: cliff-top parks and the Malecón by morning, cafés and lunch after; flat, walkable, well policed.

Parque Kennedy to Parque del Amor and the Malecón on the cliff — the visitor core, not the whole district. Underfoot: paved paths and pavements; slope: flat; shade: medium.

Lima is a desert capital of about ten million people on a cliff above the Pacific, and it has been the political centre of western South America for almost five hundred years. It is written to make a ride between districts read as a walk through those layers.

Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. Parque Kennedy

    Look for

    • Central lawn and paths
    • Craft stalls
    • Cafés on Avenida Larco

Stop 1 of 4: Parque Kennedy. Arrival point: Parque Kennedy, Miraflores.

The central park of Miraflores, with cats, craft stalls and cafés around it; twenty minutes as a start and a rest point.

Look for Central lawn and paths: Shady benches and walkways. Look for Craft stalls: Evening stalls along the edge. Look for Cafés on Avenida Larco: Seats and AC a step away.

Busy in the evening with stalls and street performers. Start here in the morning; the park is calm before 10:00. Walk to Parque del Amor by Avenida Larco and the Malecón. Shoes on.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Parque del Amor and the Malecón. It's about 12 minutes on foot. Route: Walk along Avenida Larco and the Malecón. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. Parque del Amor and the Malecón

    Parque del Amor y Malecón

    Look for

    • Sculpture and mosaic walls
    • Cliff path
    • Paragliding launch area

Stop 2 of 4: Parque del Amor and the Malecón. Locally, Parque del Amor y Malecón. Arrival point: Parque del Amor on the Malecón, Miraflores.

A cliff-top park with the sea 80 m below and a long walking path: 40 minutes, best in the morning; expect grey sky from May to November.

Look for Sculpture and mosaic walls: Curved mosaic benches in the park. Look for Cliff path: Long walk along the cliff top; keep behind the fence. Look for Paragliding launch area: Paragliders take off from the cliff on clear days.

Crowded at sunset and on weekends. Go in the morning; the wind and mist are strongest on damp afternoons. Stay behind the barriers on the cliff edge.

Walk:Next, stop 3: Huaca Pucllana. This leg is usually a ride, not a walk: ride-hail car to huaca pucllana, about 12 minutes. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. Huaca Pucllana

    Look for

    • Guided walk
    • Site restaurant

Stop 3 of 4: Huaca Pucllana.

Go on a morning guided visit: a 1,500-year-old adobe pyramid in Miraflores that takes 45-60 minutes and works as a first stop before lunch.

Look for Guided walk: The guide explains the adobe "library" stacking and the platforms. Look for Site restaurant: Terrace with a view of the pyramid; check the price and reservation.

The Lima culture built adobe temple mounds here between about AD 200 and 700; one of them, Huaca Pucllana, still stands in the middle of Miraflores. Dozens of huacas, pre-Hispanic mounds, sit between modern blocks. Huaca Pucllana is built of small adobe bricks stood on edge like books on a shelf, a technique that lets the wall shift without falling.

Stay on the marked paths; the adobe is fragile. Groups mid-morning and late afternoon; quiet at opening. Shoes with grip; the paths are dusty and uneven. No drones; check whether tripods are allowed.

Walk:Next, stop 4: Larcomar. It's about 37 minutes on foot, about 2.4 km to the south. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  5. 4. Larcomar

    Look for

    • Terraces
    • iPerú desk

Stop 4 of 4: Larcomar. Arrival point: Walk 10 minutes from Parque Kennedy, or a car to the entrance on the Malecón.

Go for sunset or a rainy hour: a cliff-side mall with terraces over the Pacific, step-free and easy with children.

Look for Terraces: Cafés and bars with a view of the sea. Look for iPerú desk: Tourist information (check hours).

Keep bags close on the escalators. Busy on weekend evenings; quiet on weekday mornings. Allowed outdoors. Do not carry big backpacks into busy shops. Take the path from Parque del Amor or walk down Avenida Larco. Go 45 minutes before sunset in clear months for a table. Is it worth it? Yes for the view and rest; the shops are ordinary. Is it safe at night? The mall is; take a car for the ride back.
