Give Lincoln one full day and one night: Capitol, Sheldon, Sunken Gardens and the Haymarket all sit within a 30-minute walk. Add a second night only for a Huskers game.

Lincoln is Nebraska's capital and second city, 95 km southwest of Omaha on I-80. It is a government-and-university town of about 291,000 people with a compact downtown: the Art Deco State Capitol, a free university art museum, the Sunken Gardens and the brick Haymarket district are all walkable from one hotel. Most travellers pass through on I-80 or stop for a Cornhuskers football weekend; a single unhurried day covers the core, and a car is only needed for the zoo, Pioneers Park or the quilt museum.

About Lincoln, Nebraska

Lincoln is the capital of Nebraska and its second most populous city, located in the southeast of the state roughly 60 miles (95 km) southwest of Omaha. It serves as the seat of Lancaster County, a role it has held since 1869. Government and higher education anchor the city, which also functions as a regional transportation hub. Despite a population of 290,000 (2019), it keeps a small-town atmosphere. Rural Nebraskans drawn by the university and state government have reinforced that character over the years, and the college presence gives local politics a somewhat more liberal cast than much of the state. Since the 1980s the city has grown more diverse, with immigrants and refugees arriving from many parts of the world. A long-standing friendly rivalry with Omaha persists.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown is walkable: Capitol to Haymarket is about 15 minutes on foot. StarTran buses run Monday–Saturday but stop around 18:30, so they are little use in the evening; fare is US$1.75 exact change (check). A car helps for the zoo, Pioneers Park and Gateway Mall. Lincoln has no crosstown freeway, and traffic is heavy at rush hour and on football Saturdays.

South Lincoln (Hwy 2 / Old Cheney)

Chain hotels with free parking; needs a car for everything, 10–15 min drive downtown.

Watch out

Safety

Lincoln is a low-risk city for visitors; the real issues are winter ice, summer heat and driving after a Haymarket night out. Downtown is fine on foot in the evening; use normal city sense after dark away from the centre.
  • StarTran buses stop running around 18:30 and there is no Sunday service: plan evenings on foot, by bike or by car.
  • On Nebraska home football Saturdays (Memorial Stadium seats over 90,000) downtown hotels sell out and traffic jams: book months ahead or avoid the date.
  • Winter brings ice and wind chills well below freezing; summer afternoons are hot and humid.
  • Amtrak's California Zephyr calls at Lincoln around midnight westbound and about 03:30 eastbound: arrange a late check-in or a taxi in advance.
