Skip as a base: see the Linen Centre and cathedral in 2–3 hours, then sleep in Belfast, 25 min by train.

Lisburn is a market town of about 71,000 people 9 miles southwest of Belfast, ceremonial 'city' since 2002 but still a town in feel. Its one strong sight is the Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum, free, in the old market house on Market Square. Trains from Belfast Grand Central run every 15 minutes and take 25 minutes, so it works as a half-day trip rather than a place to stay.

About Lisburn

Lisburn is a market town on the River Lagan, mostly in County Antrim with a small part in County Down, about 9 miles southwest of Belfast. Since 2015 it has sat within the Lisburn and Castlereagh district. Its population was 51,400 in 2021, and it was given the title of city in 2002, though the status is ceremonial and the town keeps its market-town character.

Lisburn is known above all as the centre of linen manufacture in Ireland, and the Irish Linen Centre and Lisburn Museum tells that story. It is also known for the former Long Kesh or Maze prison site to the west. The town is compact and walkable, and its Irish name, Lios na gCearrbhach, means ring-fort of the gamblers.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Entry rules depend on your passport. Full visa guide

  • Irish Linen Centre & Lisburn Museum — Housed in the late 17th-century market house on Market Square, it covers linen's place in Northern Ireland's early industrial revolution and is free to enter.
  • Christ Church Cathedral — This Church of Ireland cathedral on Castle Street, 100 yards east of the Linen Centre, was completed in 1719 on the site of earlier churches that burned down.
  • Castle Gardens — A green space on the north bank of the river where nothing remains of the castle, a mansion from the Plantation era.
  • Wallace Park — A larger, more open green space a couple of blocks north and 200 yards east of the railway station; the former ring-fort site is remembered only in the street name Fort Hill.
  • Maze Long Kesh — Three miles west of town, this former RAF base and prison site holds the Ulster Aviation Society museum with some 54 heritage aircraft and vehicles, and the Eikon exhibition centre.

Do

  • Walk the Lagan towpath, which starts by Lagan Valley Island and follows the river 11 miles downstream to central Belfast on a firm path.

Watch out

Safety

Lisburn is a low-crime town by UK standards and the centre is fine on foot in the evening. The usual cautions apply: watch for traffic on the A1 and M1, keep bags close in the retail parks, and take a taxi rather than walking the unlit roads out to Sprucefield at night.
  • The Maze Long Kesh site is largely fenced off and derelict: you can look through the fencing, not tour the prison.
  • Hilden Brewery is now mainly an events venue and does not run tours.
  • Check opening hours before travelling: several small museums and eateries keep short or seasonal hours.
